(Mods: Please delete if inappropriate.) I realize this is a delicate and sensitive subject so I fully understand if no one responds. Is it true that at least two members of the board committed suicide in the past year? If yes, was there anything we could have done to prevent the tragedy?

Touchy subject indeed especially considering current events. It's tough to say how someone considering suicide might have thought based on what we might have written here.

No way!

Unbelievable! I am truly stunned.

I don't think I am going to believe this.

I will say this about this forum.

If one is in a bad mood, do not come here. This is one of the most bitter forums I have ever participated in. When posting on TERB, get ready to flame and flame hard. Not even talking about the political forums. At least people get their say in there.

Some of the crap on TERB, fucking unique, because that shit and fucking posters banned immediately at other sites.

At times, this forum is only for broken people, bitter about life and everything.

At first, I did not know how to react to such negativity and blatant unjust attacks. After I while, I thought the best thing to say in reply is "go fuck yourselves".

"GO FUCK YOURSELVES" basically sums up the community spirit of TERB.

Guess maybe that is the reason I return to read the crap posted. It is very unique. No other forum I view, has the negativity, the whining, the sniping, the boorishness, the racism, the patronizing, the ignorance, and general lack of spirit.

I come here to take a shit, basically. That is too bad. Even I know I am wrong, but you guys deserve it I feel.

If this vicious rumour is true, RIP.

:frown:

Out of respect for their privacy I will not name names. Both were avid hobbyists. I wonder if they were mentally ill and/or the cause was somehow related to the hobby. Was it a broken heart? Were they outed to their friends and families? Did they spend all their money and died broke? Is suicide just one of the (rare?) risks of the "hobby"?

If you've ever sought grief counselling after an event like what is mentioned here, they will tell you that when someone decides to end their life that there is nothing anyone could do to change that decision.

Why have you created a thread asking a question, when you already know the answer?

I only know what I heard but don't know if it is true. (Surely there must be other members who heard the same thing.) I don't think names are important. However, what is important is if the cause(s) is related to the hobby?

Life is a funny and strange thing. You can get lots of poontang and still be miserable as hell.
I remember reading this long essay from a guy in rock journalism from back in the day and he said some of the lead singers and guitarists from top groups he knew who got tons and tons and tons of sex from hot groupies; well, he said they were often just the most miserable, god awful, totally fucked up, self destructive people he ever knew in his life.
And he reflected on one top performer who reformed himself and got out of the scene and this guy told him he gets 10% of the sex he used to get; but, he's a million times happier than he was as a star.

Also, you may not know it about some of the people you know; but, some persons just suffer from depression or they have a history of mental illness or suicide in their family and if they do they are at a higher risk for killing themselves.

I remember back in 2009, there was a guy at the company I worked at and knew for many years and I used to just hate to run into him because he wouldn't let you get by without engaging in a couple of minutes of chit chat time with him.
Anyway, I hated talking to him because no matter what, I always felt judged and condemned by him for whatever reason.
Nothing he said, just this vibe he always gave off. I always remember I couldn't wait to get a million light years away from this person.
There's an old saying that people will forget what you did, and people will forget what you said; but, they'll always remember how you made them feel.

Anyway, this person's wife decided to divorce him one day and move away with the kids to another province and he killed himself. Hanged himself in the garage.
I feel bad for this guy now. I think at bottom he was a good guy ;but, for some reason he just couldn't get all the bad stuff out of his system and it did him in.
RIP.

TERB is just another forum we all, the like minded, meet. If it was gone tomorrow we would find another place to meet with like minded individuals.

TERB has some of the most beautiful people and some of the worst people you will ever meet. It's like a microcosm of the most extreme from one end of spectrum to the other.

I love TERB becuase it keeps my mind sharp and active and I get to discuss and observe topics I would not normally get engaged in real life or with my friends. Some of you are very smart and cleaver.

I have met two wonderful people just because of terb.

Regardless of how much you guys poop all over it or regardless of some of the bad decision being made by the mods, it is still a pretty cool place. Like with anything else it's what you make of it...just don't forget to be smart and know who to trust.

Yeah I feel sad for the ones who have chosen to end their journey...I hope the ones in similar situations find other solutions to their problems...there is always a way.

I think you all are beautiful, love you all, even the ones who have chosen to go for my throat...

This sort of topic always gets me exercised as it brings up feelings of both sadness and outrage.

Some of you may remember when one of our nicest - if also forceful posters died (natural causes) about five years ago and a fellow TERBite who knew them outside of TERB, out of kindness to the rest of us, mentioned that they had died.

Out of their concern they were perhaps a bit too forthright in what they said, whereupon some lowlife pathetic excuse for a human, attempted to out the deceased to their family.

Which is comforting after the fact, but most likely bullshit.

I don't know if what the OP is saying is true. I've read a couple posts, one by a hobbyist and one by a former SP, that worried me. They received a lot of support on here though. It's tough to know the right thing to say when you've never experienced suicidal thoughts yourself. Your perspective is so far off theirs that it's hard to relate to the suffering they are going through. On the surface, their life may seem great with lots of potential. Some people don't understand that a certain mental state can prevent you from seeing the good in your life; and so they turn judgmental, calling the suicidal selfish, unappreciative, envious, etc. The truth is most of us will never understand the depths of that pain: the hopelessness, loneliness, anger, sadness. All we can do is try to alleviate it.

There have been other member suicides as well.
Most people have dealt with them in their personal lives.
I don't think it's helpful to anyone to speculate and make assumptions about them.

Unless they were a part of the intimate, personal life of someone, no one has any business speculating—or even worse simply assuming they actually know—that the decision that person made to end their life was a tragedy. Don't confuse tragedy with sadness, or grief.

If they're not crazed, incompetent and irresponsible, it's their death, just as it was their life.

A while back, a member posted the telephone number of a suicide prevention hotline. I hope he will do so again.

It seems to me that suicides happen to people in all walks of life so it probably should be no surprise if it also happened to members of this board. We all have our demons.

Well said Scarey. (You're not so Scarey after all).

There have been many positive things posted on this board. More good than bad.

As for the answer to the OP's question, I've heard about one person (who I met at a party years ago), but I too won't name them, although I'm not aware of their presence under their old moniker, so perhaps I shall assume it is true.

It's possible that hobbying was one bright light in their life and that other reasons were the cause of their blight.

Interesting thread. The rate for suicides in Canada is about 1 in 3500 (source). There are (according to the frontpage) more than 139,000 members, so that would be about 40 suicides a year...
Obviously the 139,000 is inflated by lurkers, multiples, or people who signed up once, but even if the actual, contributing population on terb was 10% the 139K, its still ~4 suicides/year.

BTW, suicide is almost as big a killer as breast cancer in Canada. Why not do something about it?
