I think there are other species that do that as well. If a female human 'mates' with two guys in the same day, the second guy's sperm will try to attack and kill the first guy's. So he has better odds of impregnating her.
Some have theorized that the woman's body will reject the less desirable man's sperm in favour of the man she prefers but obviously very difficult to prove. Not sure how many women would volunteer for that test. LOL
