Perhaps Thailand isn't "the land of smiles" after all.

I was planning on visiting Acapulco this year anyway. Far safer.

A bunch of Vietnamese refugees just arrived in Canada from Thailand. They seem to be a happy bunch.

Spent close to a year in TL in total on various trips and have visited all the seediest areas and haven't experienced any of this. Many foreigners act like complete cheapskate douchebags when they are there and get what they deserve most of the time. This article is complete exaggeration in my opinion. The Thais have a reason to hate foreigners because many act like pigs, trying to grind street vendors down to nothing when shopping. They say that the Thais try to gouge foreigners with pricing, when it's often the opposite with the foreigners the villains.

The Thais are pleasant people I've found that won't bother you unless provoked. I walked through the protest sites and never felt threatened, even at five in the morning with guys wearing bullet proof vests, however looking back that may not have been the wisest choice, but I was drunk.

I have done many trips over there. And am heading back again in three weeks. I have noticed lots of crime and bad things. I saw a guy drown after fighting and being chased into the ocean. I've seen countless fatal road accidents from drunk driving. I've seen fights, stabbings and suicides.
But you know what? Most of it happens to foreign wankers who are pretty much asking for it. Too many people go there thinking they can behave and act in all the ways they cannot get away with at home. No respect shown for the country or culture. The place seems to attract the lowest of society. Lots of the problems are alcohol related and happen late at night. Like any location, if you are in the wrong place at the wrong time and acting like a total arrogant and disrespectful dickwad then bad things are gonna happen.
I've made many genuine and sincere Thai friends, and I know where and where not to go. Always felt safe. I'd rather go out and have fun with them than be around the drunken idiot tourists (the worst seem to be Brits and Aussies. Seems like they like to celebrate getting out of prison by taking a trip to Thailand).
I'd be happy if stories like that keep those idiots from visiting.

Another agreement that a lot of Westerners are simply d**ks when they are out of their country. Amazing the amount of Darwin candidates who are able to scrape together a few bucks to travel overseas.

396 british deaths? If you saw the old British fucks that live in Thailand you'd realize most of them probably died of natural causes.

SeaDoo (pre-existing) rental damage extortion scams are a HUGE problem in Thailand. Never ever rent one.

And never leave your passport with anyone for any reason. If they lose it, you are so fucked.

FYI: I've been to both and Acapulco is far from safe. Wander off the beaten track and you can be in big trouble as besides tourist rip offs the cops are very corrupt

I have never felt threatened in Thailand and agree with another poster the trouble seems to come from drunken foreigners who treat Thais as lowly peasants.

It was a joke. Acapulco has been a war zone over the past couple of weeks due to fallout from the student murders scandal in Mexico.

And it wasn't exactly all that welcoming and safe before that.

My two cents on Thailand: beautiful country, very friendly people. The exception is Bangkok, which is a disgusting cesspool of filth and scum. That's not me being bitter either, the extortion was poorly attempted and you need more than an old man and a ladyboy to scare DB ;)

Being a tourist anywhere these days makes one an instant target for those existing in poverty..it's kind of sad the way the world has changed for the worse. This thread has reinforced my belief, that the best hobbying is right here at home......a pot pourri of international choices without the need for pinscher style hyper vigilance, and certainly very minimal risk of landing tits down in a ditch or stuck in a foreign flea bitten crowbar hotel with some gringo smiling as he waves your passport at you while he's calling your wife to send "bail" money

The thought of Heading to countries where the sex trade is a means to an end in order to fend off abject poverty and hunger, just to fuck barely legal teens, is exploitive and repulsive to say the least

I lived in Thailand for 2 and a half years and I loved it. Outside of the seedy tourist areas it is a very beautiful and friendly country. I plan to go back the first chance I get because there is nowhere I would rather spend my vacations.
