was rear ended by a cop car last week, he admitted fault, damage was around $1500-2000 but i decided not to make a claim thru insurance feeling even though i wasnt at fault it could some how jack up my premiums in the future. did i do the right thing? im in a group plan.

Gettin' Licked
I got rear ended a few weeks ago. He wanted to pay cash but the estimates were pretty high so he decided to go through insurance and admitted fault.

According to my agent, who I trust very much, as he admitted fault that there is no effect on my policy/rates and no effect on my forgiveness for an at fault accident. I'm no expert but I trust her completely and put it through my policy.

I would have said
give me a get out of jail free card from the cop
then after C36 comes in go see an escort right in front t of the police see what they do
then pull out the card and wave ....buh-bye:D

You should have made the claim, he rear ended you and was at fault. It would not affect your premium.

Is it too late to make the claim? The cop of all people should know that it is illegal to not report the accident at the collision centre at least. Do you have any witnesses? Some LE also now have dash cams, if he rear ended you then it is 99.9% his fault whether he admits liability or not.

Cop admitted fault would have gladly reported it but didnt I assume. I didnt exchange my insurance or license with him. I had a witness in my car. Its the small chance im worried about. I hear nightmare stories of drivers paying $500 a month, right now I pay around $120/mth. I dont have collision coverage but in this case I believe I'd be covered if I made a claim because it was his fault, right. We all know what the auto insurance industry is like, I dont trust them.

You'll need the other drivers insurance and licence info. Your rates won't be affected since you were not at fault. Over $1k damage should be reported. Most insurance companies will give you up to year to make the claim. No fault insurance basically means you deal with your own insurance company. Cop knew better and took advantage of situation. If you rear ended his cruiser it'd be a different story.

Just happened to me two months ago, same situation as yours, not a cop though. He claimed fault in writing, thats all my insurance company wanted to know.
No increase in my insurance rates. But it does go down on record, that you were involved in a collision.
