With used cars if you don't know what you're looking for you will most likely get burned.

Big dealerships such as honda, toyota, lexus etc are less likely to try and sell wrecked cars, however they still have them.

Small dealerships on the other hand especially around steeles, with names like "Bobs fine cars" are usually full of wrecks and auction cars. These are cars that large dealerships don't want to touch, these guys buy them for dirt cheap and then sell them to ignorant people because they're a bit less money than comparable ones at the big name dealership.

Best bet is ask someone who's done this before to come along.
carfax.com should be your first line of defense, a competent mechanic your second.

I have purchased many cars and motorcycles over the years for myself and helped to get several others for family members and friends.

From my personal experience i've found that about 8-9 out of 10 cars on autotrader have hidden problems, history isn't what the seller claimed, out of country/province, or has been a previous wreck.

BTW a range rover will bankrupt you unless you have a money tree.

If you are looking for a truly high end car, call some of the leasing companies that specialize in them. Look at some that have come off lease.

You seem to know about the business. Any idea if there is a service that could locate an older car that I would love to find for nostalgic reasons. The vehicles in question are a 69 Dodge Polara or a 67 Eldorado.

Toyota Venza V6 AWD No accidents, no warranty claims.
4 years old
second car, low mileage 58,000 kms.

You are paying Blackbook price, but the bonuses are that you are getting a car in perfect condition, meticulously maintained with oil rinse at every oil change with synthetic oil

It was a hypothetical question. I am testing out a theory that I can sell on my own a perfectly maintained with three year extended manufacturers warranty and a set of Blizzack winter tires on rims without the dealers help my used car for full black book price. I have already got a few standing offers on it. It is not available till the new Venza comes out or at least till the winter is over, as my other car is back wheel drive.

Only go for the big dealerships since they're not likely to sell you a lemon. As one poster said, there's still a possibility of getting a wrecked, but repaired car. The price would be the biggest give away. It's been a while since I've bought a used car, but I think you can take it to a mechanic to have it checked before putting the money down. I don't think the big dealerships will allow you to do this though.

Man, you guys have no clue how to put a deal together. Offer the car to DABOY for 20K, take it to the dealer, tell them you will buy your new car from them if they will give you 20K and then sell to your friend for 20K+ $100 fee. You save 2600 HST, get 2K more for your car, total value $4600 and DABOY gets the vehicle for $2700 less then black book. WIN/WIN. If you guys do this you should gift me a 1 hr session since I saved you guys almost 7K

I stay away from generic used car lots. They buy and sell crap. I've stuck with CPO cars from brand dealers for resales. But even then, that's no guarantee of a good product. I was lied to by s BMW dealership on a CPO. Much more damage repair than they disclosed. I only found out because of premature paint failure. I had to threaten litigation before they would own up to repairing the car (it was out of CPo warranty by the time I discovered it)

it also depends on the car you want. For popular cars, buying used is not much different than new. MB GLs and GLAs are flying through the door. They're even selling demos on a preorder basis. Buying a one year old car means all you're saving is the freight.

Do your homework on autotrader, carcostcanada.com and Edmunds. Know the car you want and prices cold. But, generally speaking, the market is hot and cars are selling, so it's not a good time to be expecting big discounts.

This is the path to take for the OP's request. CPO's are your best alternative, because you get an extended warranty and it's backed up across North America by the manufacturer. CPO warranties are actually purchased by the dealer from the manufacturer after inspection. They lay out money...if there is a pattern of poor inspections the manufacturer gets pissed because he's paying out the warranty costs. It's not perfect but it's got some semblance of checks and balances. Audi, BMW and MB take the same approach. And Autotrader is a good place to look for these cars because all of the deals use them (reputable or otherwise).
