Islamic State extremists have released a video showing the beheading of British captive David Haines.

The father-of-two, an aid worker, was abducted by militants in Syria last year and appeared at the end of a video showing the beheading of US journalist Steven Sotloff earlier this month.

The Foreign Office was working urgently tonight to verify the contents of the video, in which the hostage says he holds David Cameron and Britain's foreign policy responsible for his own execution.

The Prime Minister said: 'The murder of David Haines is an act of pure evil. My heart goes out to his family who have shown extraordinary courage and fortitude.

Apparently, John Foley's parents were threatened with prosecution if they tried to raise money for his ransom.

Because the best way to react to unspeakably monstrous evil is to be intractable and awful yourself. Or maybe the U.S. gov. just wanted to remind everyone that the world is nothing but a great big shit sandwich smothered in shit sauce, with a side order of shit.

The guy went into a war zone.

He knew the risks presumably. It's not like they kidnapped him off of a London street.

If you don't want to risk getting your head chopped off by a stone age whack job, don't go into a war zone in the middle east.

The specific killing of 1 individual seems less "unspeakably monstrous" than the continuing use of drone attacks which kill indiscriminately - the target + everyone else in the area.
It's the lesser of various evils. On the other hand, ISIS's business model is to march into a village, kill all the men, rape and sell all the women.

If you don't want to risk getting your head chopped off by a stone age whack job, don't go into a war zone in the middle east.
And if you don't want to die from Ebola, don't go to West Africa. What is it with white people (probably Christians) who want to go to Syria and West Africa to help?

if you go to Syria, you deserved to be kill
no one deserves to be killed. Especially an innocent person.

But when you go to a war zone where (rightly or wrongly) the vast majority of the populace hates your guts and would love nothing more than to chop your head off while you still need it, you are taking your chances.

And likewise, I won't shed any tears when the us or UK nails these murderers (and they will, you could hide in a submarine at the bottom of the ocean, the Americans and the Brits will find you and kill you.

.
If you pay a ransom, they will just come back and kidnap another person and get more money to feed the terroroist and fund their cause. The life you save today may mean thousands of deaths in the future.

Maybe true. But if he's your son, father or brother, you are going to do whatever it takes.

I wonder if all of the politicians would react differently if it was their relatives. Suppose Michelle Obama was somehow kidnapped and about to be beheaded. What would Barack do?

Right. Because ISIS is governed by rational, sane planning. The fact that the government disallowed the family from paying a ransom has stopped ISIS from beheading anyone since, and has made them think twice about kidnapping any more westerners.

The UK and the US should put a bounty on his head, independent of each other. Other countries should be invited to come in with their bounties Then even when he is found through other means they should send in Hellfire missiles and take out his rats nest of terrorist. That way these scum can not trust anyone from turning them in.

It shows the morals, actually the lack of the same, of ISIS, that they would abduct, hold captive and murder an aid worker.
