Somehow I wouldn't feel all that safe living in America

In theory, you can carry non-restricted firearms (unloaded) in Canada. I am (supposedly) free to walk through downtown with my Tavor slung over my shoulder. Of course, in practice, I'd have the ETF tickling my prostate in no time if I tried that...

I suspect a few of those pictures (the ones showing people carrying ARs) are from recent OpenCarry rallies.

We are conditioned to react adversely to guns. They're not a part of our lifestyle. We're trained to think that they are inherently evil and dangerous. Most urban Canadians who have an opportunity to learn about firearm and use them safely get over that fear quickly.

Many states have open carry (no permit required).

I spend a fair bit of time down south and I rarely see open carry. When I do, it's LE or sport fishermen (no kidding, for the gators). But, lots of people conceal carry for self-defence.

A lot of Americans I know through car clubs all pack heat, all the time, no matter where, no matter what.

Freaks me out.

They pack heat just going to Home Depot.

Sorry, that's fucked up.

There was a car show last summer in Canada (for the first time) and a few of them refused to come here because they couldn't pack and they were so scared that they would get jumped. No convincing them otherwise.

It really begs the question though, if everyone is carrying a gun, are you really any safer?

Presumably the bad guys are better shots and stronger and meaner.

That's precisely the mentality. They have a gun culture; we don't.

If you accept the premise that the bad guys can access guns no matter what laws we pass, then why should we prohibit law abiding citizens from bearing arms? (btw, the logic seems sound to me; guns are used to perpetrate crimes, so why would a law deter someone who is inclined to violate laws in the first instance?)

According to the FBI, the average active shooter incident lasts 12.5 minutes. Active shooter durations with armed bystanders is something like 3 minutes. Some cowboys like to to cite that statistics to support their argument for concealed carry. (But, most sane experts will tell you NOT to engage an active shooter - because the shooter will then engage YOU and you greatly increase the risk of friendly fire).

As for whether the baddies are better shots, etc. Maybe, maybe not. Training with your weapon is a must for those who choose to carry. I don't know if bad guys spend time at the range, but sending lead downrange on the regular is part of gun culture.

And the exact opposite happened in Texas when they started open-carry laws. Shootings actually went down, not up

A lot of the Second Amendments right / Right to Carry ( bear arms ) people are doomsday survivalist. Even the Costco store cater to their needs.

I'd guess some of these are examples of protests where gun owners are testing the laws and the ability for private companies to ban open carry where it's legal.

Target is one example of a company that has asked customers not to open carry in their stores, hence the last picture.

With all due respect, you call it feeling safe living in America, but there is a dichotomy, a big one there. These people are probably from Texas or somewhere like that. In the Northeast, it would be unlikely to witness such nonsense. In cultural urban area people don't walk around brandishing their guns. You will find it more in a redneck culture is my observation having lived there for 20 years of my life. inmho
