Funny you'd feel it necessary to include that last bit....

Is it possible you're afraid that terbites might point out this guy made a bonus that was 300 times bigger than his chain's employees' average annual salary?

That is, of course, how capitalism works. And it certainly doesn't negate the CEO's very kind gesture. But it does make you wonder if some kind of cap on CEO pay actually holds merit.

Why? Because YOU don't make as much?

The market pays what the market will bear and if you can warrant receiving a bonus 300 times bigger than the average employee's salary (i.e., there is a company willing to pay it) then in our economic system you've "earned" it. I've watched companies say "we're not paying that!" and the talent has left to work elsewhere and WERE paid that amount (or more). If you want the best and brightest, you've gotta pay for it. That's why governments are filled with mediocre performing managers (I'm generalizing but the talent level is definitely several notches below private sector standards); if you're any good you leave to take a private sector job that pays more.

Getting a big pay day is one of the things that motivates major players in the work force. Anyone can work their way up the corporate ladder if they REALLY try. Sounds more like sour grapes and envy to me.

Do I have to be some poor, jaded individual to consider alternative economic systems? lol

I know how the system works, and it's an imperfect system. It's pretty much designed where eventually all the chips fall into a few people's baskets. Emerging technologies and markets are exasperating the problem. Such an economy is not strong, nor fair really. I'm not sure I fully support a system that says "take what you can get and screw the rest!" with a justification of "it's better than the alternatives". It's only better because we haven't thought up something decent yet.

Value.... rarity..... think Toronto Maple Leafs players - they never win the Stanley Cup (or get anywhere close) provide "moderate entertainment" and yet they make quite a bit more than the guy selling beer.... who I might argue provides a more reliable enjoyable outcome.

On the bonus - good on him.

Ok, the CEO, created/runs the company that sells the products that customers buy and require people(employees) to create the products in order to facilitate that transaction. Hmmm, the CEO does nothing you say. Interesting. Last I checked, no one is holding a gun to any employees head to force them to work there. If they feel they are underpaid, or under appreciated, they are more than free to seek greener pastures elsewhere.

Except that, you know, they're not. But keep telling yourself that it's all fair. Probably makes it all easier to swallow.

The story is capitalism at its finest. It's a publicity stunt that will generate more business. Throwing bread crumbs is a sure way to placate the peasants.

I have a confidentiality agreement with the TD bank, but because of Rogers, something very equitable and over the top in fairness happpened to me. They bent over backwards to help me out in something that was partially their fault but mostly mine, when they could have turned their backs oh me. I have the upmost respect for Ted Rogers.
