The more pain inflicted on an animal, the more hideous the crime. Accordingly, proportionate punishment is called for. I would find it hard to understand one standard of penalty regardless of the level of abuse.

Should a fine or penalty be placed on people eating animals that were slaughtered?
Of course. So long as it extends to the following

Many Processed foods
Worcestershire sauce
Leather shoes, belts, bags etc.
Some Packaged cookies and crackers, refried beans, flour tortillas, ready-made piecrusts
Marshmallows, yogurt, frosted cereals, gelatin-containing desserts
Breakfast cereal, candy, chocolate, baked goods, margarine, vegetable oil sprays
Synthetic butter, cheese, vegetable fats and oils, candy, ice cream, beverages, condiments
Cheese
Vanilla flavoring, baked goods, beverages, candy
Margarine, mincemeat, pastries

How do you know an animal is in pain, maybe they like it. They can't exactly tell you unless you speak their tongue.

You are right Celticman. Its unfortunate, the animals have no story to tell.

Its been very well documented that children who abuse animals, is not a very good sign in the future, for anything !!

Yes, the courts should, to a chain point. Someone accidentally running over a cat is not the same as someone who tortures a cat.

That said, animals are not people so they should not be treated as such.

People who purposefully hurt animals as in torture them for their own sick purposes should face stiff jail time. People who are found guilty of putting out dog poison in parks killing dogs should go to jail. any perverted and masochistic behavior towards animals should face stiff jail sentences. imo.
