Looking to upgrade my gaming console to occupy some time in the winter and was wonder if anyone has any reason to choose one over the other or if it really doesn't matter (my expectation). I'm not too interested in online gaming if that impacts the decision.

In the last generation Xbox 360 got a head start on PS3 and had a better online experience (where most gaming is now done). In this generation it's largely a given that PS4 is the better offering - if neither set of exclusive titles (halo or unchartered for example), then I'd go with a PS4. I think M$ missed a step on this gen frankly.

I own both a 360 and PS3 and PS4 - have not yet seen a reason to get a Xbox one.

PS4 is much smaller, doesn't have the brick power supply that the Xbox has, neither has a plethora of games at the moment.

Both systems are very similar and have very similar offerings when it comes to games, and online play and both are the same price so it's a tough call.

What makes them different are the controllers and the exclusive titles. For example Xbox has Halo, Forza, Fable, Killer Instinct, PS4 has The Last Of Us, The Order 1886 and Infamous SS

If you like shooters and more fast paced casuual games Xbox is better for that, If you like deep story driven games then PS4 is good for that

When it comes to online, they are both the same.

Do you care about TV functioanlity at all because Xbox can be used a cable box.

would you consider a pc?

it is more expensive initially but every few years you might have to iupgrade the graphics card but typically a pretty good card can be had for less than 300

I like this approach as you can upgrade parts rsther than toss the whole box out.

also companies like steam allow you to download games from home and many of the games go on sale eventually. you can even create a wishlist to alert when games you want go on sale.

the downside is that there are certain games that are exclusive to consoles.

I have a solid PC. Some strategy games I prefer on PC and some others like Skyrim. I have found consoles much better for FPS type games.
Most FPS come on both platforms, it may come down to which controller you like the best....

Gamer here for almost 30 years. Here's how you make your decision:

1.) Look up what games are coming _exclusively_ for each console. Which console has the games that _you_ want to play?
2.) Buy that console.

- Get the subscription to either PS Plus or Xbox Live Gold. The free games and weekly discounts will make back your money very quickly. I haven't paid full price for a game in over 2 years.
- In the mid and long term, both consoles are going to be nearly equal in graphics quality and performance. This means that you can't use graphics as a differentiator in your decision.
- Ignore the features of each console that you'll never use. Like voice command on the Xbox One. It's cool but if you won't use it then it's not a differentiator in your decision.

I own an X box one and hate it. The interphase its just so ugly the joysticks make an awful sound when moving and the games get stuck you cant quit the game so you have to put in a diferent one if there is an error on theone you are playing and there are a lot o errors there is a brick power bar that makes noise and it never turns on when you command with your voice also there is no warning when your controller is about to die so you can lose vluable time getting the second on on plugging in that one over all is an awful experience for me. looking forward to selling it and buying a PS4

Yes you can kill a game that crashes.

Get the system with the games that you want.

I got an xbone, because i like live and I like Halo. No other reason really.

I've been thinking about get my first gaming system in about 15 years as well so I'm interested in this. I'm interested in playing baseball, golf and any game that resembles WWII (like a call of duty type of game). Any thoughts?

If you're into baseball Sony has The Show come out each March, an absolutely gorgeous, addictive experience for a baseball fan.

We have a PS 4 (I say we because my son plays it more often than I do), we play Fifa 15, Call of Duty, he plays Far Cry 4 and Destiny - those are the games on high rotation now....

The new generation console is all about online game play. I'm a hardcore loyal Playstation fan. I refuse to get a PS4 if you have to pay to play your games again, since it's not backward compatible with PS3 titles.Although I did try the PS4 controller it unique with that middle write space and share button.Oh and best to get a PSPlus membership, get exclusive and new games for free trials and discounts. But after the second year great games will come out on both systems. The Resident Evil remakes in HD on PS this month .

Previous gen I had both a 360 and a PS3. Liked both, played the 360 more b/c I liked MS online better, also their controller. I've gone with an XB1 this gen simply because I'm a Halo fan, but the PS4 seems to have better graphic fidelity than the XB1.

Last week though MS announced backwards compatibility for 360 games, which is a bonus, whereas Sony has stated they have no plans to incorporate backwards compatibility.
