I am guessing this is your unthinking knee jerk reaction to any proposal for additional regulation on firearms. Regardless of how stupid, ineffective, or ill conceived it is, you are automatically for it, whether or not you understand it. Right?
I understand perfectly....there is no logical reason for you to own a gun unless you are a farmer who needs one to shoot predators.

You are probably a city dweller and there is ZERO reason for you to own a gun in Canada.

Other than farmers and natives living in rural areas all guns should be banned. You don't need them.

Try to explain why you think you NEED one, not why you think you should HAVE one.

How would the police know it is an illegal gun? If you cannot produce the registry certificate they may seize the firearm until you can. You then have two weeks to produce the registration.

Where is your car during this time?
Seems to me the police err on the side of caution, you would only forget your paperwork once...

"Target shooting" or "collecting" are other perfectly legitimate reasons to own a firearm, just ask the RCMP.

Correct but we're discussing illegal guns are we not?
According to the Firearms Act, every offense is criminal, so the term "illegal guns" casts a wide net. Having the wrong paperwork makes your otherwise legally acquired and responsibly used gun, "illegal". Draconian much?

If it's that important, you should carry up to date paperwork should you not? It's like ROFO using drinking to excess as an excuse for doing coke.

What happens now if the cops find an illegal handgun in a vehicle?
Despite what fuji says...
Because the three year mandatory minimum jail sentence isn't enough of a deterrent?

Multiple very serious criminal charges. ...

adding it's almost impossible for police to get a conviction under the Criminal Code for anyone found to have an unlawful handgun in their vehicle....

So, according to your logic, if you forget your wallet and therefore driver's license in another pair of pants or forget to put your car's registration in the glove box, you should go to jail?
Well you can/do get charged for driving without a licence/insurance if you forget your wallet and just like those cases, an honest mistake of forgetting the paperwork for a legal, properly transported gun would likely be dismissed as well.

According to the article...
Probably the case for career criminals who don't have meaningful employment in the first place, get a slap on the wrist and pass through revolving door prisons once again. But it's a great way to ruin a regular, law abiding citizen's life. The Firearms Act doesn't deter criminals, it creates them.

Well you can/do get charged for driving without a licence/insurance if you forget your wallet and just like those cases, an honest mistake of forgetting the paperwork for a legal, properly transported gun would likely be dismissed as well.
Forgetting your driver's license isn't a criminal offense. If no one gets hurt, you get a ticket and pay a fine, not jail time.

You walk if you say its your uncle's car or even though its your car but a friend of yours had been using it the last week and half.

Of course you also have to deny its your illegal gun(s) if you want to walk free.

Target shooting. Trap and skeet. Sport hunting. IPSC, Three Gun. You are talking about an Olympic sport, a PanAm game, a Commonwealth Games event. You narrow minded opinion is ignorant and unwelcome.

Particularly on an escort review board: prove you need to have paid sex, there in reason anyone should need to have sex other than married people starting a family. That is how you sound to me.

If you didn't have a license you would be driving illegally without a license. Same would apply to illegal guns as opposed to not having your permit with you...no?

Because the three year mandatory minimum jail sentence isn't enough of a deterrent?

Would they also impound cars for people who have legally owned handguns but forgot the paperwork at home? Seize your car as well as the firearm until you can get a court date to prove it is legally owned?

How do they prove at roadside that it is a restricted handgun and not a non restricted rifle? Some cases are borderline. Do they seize your car until you can find a firearms verifier to prove it is actually non restricted? Say if you have a mare's leg with a barrel just long enough to be counted as a rifle? What if it is a legal antique? Seize your car until you can prove it?
Please re-read the suggestion.

http://www.cp24.com/news/liberal-mp...d-cars-if-they-find-illegal-handgun-1.1927761

A Liberal backbencher wants to give cops the power to impound a car if an illegal handgun is found in the vehicle.

Toronto MPP Mike Colle says his private members' bill would also allow police to suspend the driver's licence.

He says he hopes it would act as a deterrent, adding it's almost impossible for police to get a conviction under the Criminal Code for anyone found to have an unlawful handgun in their vehicle.

Colle says the federal government has jurisdiction over gun ownership, but the province has responsibility for road safety and vehicle licensing.

He says he's received support for the bill from police forces and Toronto Crime Stoppers.

But a private members' bill rarely becomes law unless the government backs it.
The cops do NOT get more power on "Legally owned" firearms.

Show me where in the Criminal Code, driving without a license is a summary and/or indictable offense and the punishment is at least 3 years in jail.

The examples I cited are cases where the police would not know at roadside whether you have an illegal handgun.

I doubt very much that most police are able to tell whether an antique pistol was made before or after 1897. If before, it is legal even if the owner had no firearms license. If after, it is a restricted firearm that requires registration.

Do they just seize your car until you can prove that it is in fact a legal antique?

And what about long barreled pistols? Is the cop qualified to measure a barrel properly to determine whether it is long enough to be considered a non restricted rifle?

And even if it is clearly a recognizable handgun like a Glock, just because you don't have the paperwork with you doesn't mean it is illegal. Today it would be seized and you would have two weeks to show up with the registration papers, which you might well do. Now you lose your car as well even though you have done nothing illegal???

Again the suggestion from this private member bill is giving the new power to the cops ONLY for the illegal handguns.

Again the suggestion from this private member bill is giving the new power to the cops ONLY for the illegal handguns.
And as people, who are actually familiar with the subject, have been telling you, as per the Firearms Act, all guns are illegal and all offenses are criminal unless there is proof otherwise; guilty until proven innocent, that's how the Firearms Act and other gun control schemes criminalize otherwise good people. You may have some fantasies about gangbangers being busted with this proposed bill, in reality, it's probably some otherwise normal, law abiding citizen who forgot a piece of paper at home, getting harassed.
