They have taken it to such extreme that even dating might become criminal. Do you dare to take your girlfriend or even wife to a restaurant, wine and dine her and then have sex with her afterwards?
True story. Met a gal from the States visiting Toronto on business. Our first contact was with Adult Friend Finder. Didn't have to take her out to a movie but we had a nice Thai dinner and then back to her hotel for some fun. Saw her more than once. Ostensibly, it could've appeared no different than a paid dinner-show date session with an SP.

WTF!

What about the rock star who has sex with a groupie, and gives her a diamond bracelet as a thank you?

The difference, and the question that would be asked is, would she have had sex with you anyway? Even without the consideration? If the answer is yes, then you're in the clear. Just like the rock star.

What consideration?

Is the definition of consideration in the proposed law broad enough to include gifts or presumed consideration?

Every escort would've had sex with us if they don't want to bite the hand that feeds them. Why kill the goose that lays the golden egg?

Best part of the new law is shilling will now get you a $2000 fine and 18 months in jail. Its about time! Once advertising is illegal you can bet a flood of shilling posts from the pimps. Hide your IPS muthafuckas! They'll be contacting website owners for our identities if we advertise for the ladies.

I wasn't able to refresh (F5) but I accidently clicked on the NO blue box and got a message that I voted!!!!!!!. This damn government has made me brain dead today :(. I can't think. If I was accidently clicked on YES box I would have been real angry.
Don't feel too bad, I accidentally clicked on "not sure", which is how I found out how it worked.

This is just fucking great! Now I gotta look for another hobby like getting back to chess or dominos!!!! :frusty:
Challenge escorts to games of chess. If you win, she has sex with you. I don't think this violates the proposed law.

What do you mean presumed consideration? It would definitely catch gifts. As for the dinner you had with your friend, it could be consideration. But would only be consideration if you said, "I'll take you out for dinner and in return, you have sex with me" and she says "ok". If you two decided to have sex, but are hungry and wanted a bite to eat, then no it doesn't count.

Obviously C-36 cannot survive in its current form, and probably (hopefully?) Peter Mackay understands this. All of the constitutionally problematic factors of the pre-Bedford status quo are not only mirrored but amplified in C-36. Given a Conservative majority next year (likely), I predict two possible outcomes:

a) C-36 is the prelude to full bore criminalization of prostitution, which was one of the constitutionally legitimate paths forward that the SCC marked out in Bedford. Certainly C-36's advertising and avails provisions stand to functionally criminalize both indies and agencies.
b) C-36 will force a rightward "clarification" on the Bedford decision. While C-36 will not survive, the court might make some explicit concessions on advertising or purchasing or whatever.

Is the law retroactive ?
Ex post facto criminal laws violate the Canadian constitution. In order to pass one, Parliament would have to invoke the Notwithstanding Clause, which they have never done for a criminal law as far as I can recall. It would require extreme circumstances (for example, a murder is committed that somehow isn't murder because of some weird loophole, so Parliament changes the law ex post facto - retroactively - to close the loophole and prosecute) and they would be prepared for appeal and constitutional challenge... IN this case, Parliament doesn't want to force a constitutional challenge themselves, because they're pretty much guaranteed to have it overthrown as well.

Better travel overseas to Europe, legal and much cheaper. I'm happy they didn't extend the purchase law to canadians traveling outside Canada ( they do under Norwegian law)
Any Canadian who commits an illegal act outside of Canada is committing a crime, same rules, same punishment as if that person was in Canada.

Bill C-36 is a solid bill for the Conservatives and will not do them any harm at the polls next year. The Conservatives have played brilliantly to their Reform, Tea Party like base. Those who have difficulty with the bill are not Harper Conservative voters anyway. In reality it is likely that this bill will be struck down by the court system once again as it appears to be idiotic, the wrong laws at the wrong time given the current state of affairs and current complex realities. Harper wants the pissing match with the Supreme Court to continue but will he been even there when this law gets to the SSC, probably not. As Bill C-36 is challenged and destroyed, the Conservatives will portray themselves as protectors of the flock and will work with the media to showcase what they see as the evils and perils of the indestructible, indispensable and perpetual sex trade. Which political party will campaign at their peril to legalize prostitution again lol?

When you guys and gals discuss " consideration ", you fail to take into account " police consideration ". So it is unlikely that the police would investigate or do a sting on a female polishing some guy's candle who changed her tire, they may consider a dancer being fondled, or a MPA tuggin' on some guy under the guise of a massage.

Which MP wants to stand in the house and oppose the vote. Political parties are great for letting another party take the fall, there may be some talk, but don't expect any action.
And who wants to spend the time and money on another challenge? If I was in government, I'd cherry pick who gets charged.

I'm officially out of the game

Thanks Ms. Bedford!!! :frusty:
Somewhere right now, our supreme draconian overlord Harper is sitting back in his wing chair, a twisted smile on his lips, and in his best "Mr. Burns" impression is saying "excellent!"
