Flying first class vs business?

I did see a TV interview many years ago where Buffett told that he flew economy, I am not so sure that he still does this. If Buffett flew my airline, I would comp him. PR like that money can not buy. Alison Redford is a politician, it would look bad for her to be comped. As I said before, upgrading VIPs and frequent flyers are good for the airline as it cost the airline nothing because the upgrade is only available if there is an empty seat in business or first class and it frees up a seat in economy for a paying customer. So really it makes for happy customers and the airline is out a few drinks.
If any one starts to talk about load factors and revenue models I will scream.

FYI. He owned a nice Challenger 600 called The Indefensible. I was in a FBO where it was being fueled about 20 years ago. I have no idea what he uses now. He also owns Net Jets through Berkshire Hathaway and is a big customer.

I have no idea if he flies economy, or ever did once he got the 600

I am not sure but I think he only has a time share in the jet. With all the crazies around these days it might be a good idea for him not to fly with kooks.

600 was his. Not a time share.

Why are we talking about planes we will never afford and cards we will never be invited to carry?

It feels depressing.

Heaven, definately Heaven
However, why would anyone pay $5000 more for first class? What benefit does it offer, and how can one justify forking over double the amount?
Clearly, this is a case of diminishing returns. But why do people fly first? Because they can afford to? Because it's a status thing? Or because of some other benefit? Is it really that much better than business?
If you're asking these questions, you haven't done it, right? How about flying to Japan, monthly.
What about Hong Kong, non-stop, monthly.

Okay, now the "law of diminishing returns" factors into what? The other passengers' intelligence, maybe.

I've flown First Class on Thai and Singapore. Wow. Just wow. From the rock star treatment at checkin to the private airport lounges (including free spa for FC passengers only), to the caviar, $450/bottle cognac, pyjamas, etc, just wow. But not worth the money. If, like me, all you really want is a lay flat bed for the flight, business offer that at half the price or less.

I think the OP was also asking what is the difference between the $5k business class and the $10k first.
I have only flown BA but the difference is subtle. $5k noticeably different - nah - I don't see it.
I see it as:
Jump from economy to business well worth the cost and very noticeable.
Jump from business to first just not worth it.

Also - first class is there for when someone else is paying for it.

"If you need me in India that damn bad and you say that I am that damn important then arrange a first class ticket"

First class Emirates was amazing, took a shower, got a HJ, life is good but not worth the price.

A subtle difference on BA?

First Cabin: http://www.britishairways.com/en-ca...ur-cabins?source=INFOHUB_travel_classes#First

Note the thickness (almost twice the padding) and width of the seat. It is like going from a functional mid-range hotel to a 5 Star. VERY obvious.

Is it "worth it"? Like so many things in life, including the 'bobby', it depends on how many digits there are on your pay check.

You make your choices and put your money down.

I think most flying First class would be higher level executives (who probably still work during the trip), the wealthy and minor celebs (those not flying on a private jet with an entourage)...business class is great as you don't have kids and babies...and for longer trips.

I had my travel agent upgrade me to First Class on a Singapore Airlines flight to LA once (Business was full). Was a nice experience, sat next to some French chemicals tycoon who help Jacques Cousteau found SCUBA. I was the only "kid" in first (in my 30s at the time) and only one to board with a backpack and shorts…. LOL

One guy sent three steaks back, flight attendants were crying at one point, told them that they'd never see him again in a few hours and he'd be an ass for the rest of his life, they treated me very well….
