My father recently passed away and now we are in the process of changing his name on all accounts over to my mothers name. We call up Bell, Union Gas, Reliance, Hydro and water. All no problems, changed the name right away. We call up Rogers, they can't change the name unless they see the Will. I was like "WTF". Personally, who gives them the right to see a personal document like the Will just to change the name. All of the other companies had not problems.

I am very sorry for your loss.

It sucks when companies follow the rules during times like these. Legally I think they are just doing what they are required to do. You may have gotten a new employee playing 100% by the rules, who knows. I would request a call back from a manager and I am sure they will get you properly taken care of.

Did they ask for the will or the POA? The later is pretty well standard, the former not so much.

I would not be sending them a copy of the will.. ever. It's a personal document and they dont' need to see it at all.

The POA, yes, that should be more than sufficient. Tell them the Ministry and the banks accepted it, so they should too because Rogers is less important and requires less security than transferring bank accounts or vehicle ownerships!

If they give you flak, close the account and get your Mom to sign up for new services with Rogers. She may get some better deals/freebies (few months free, etc.) for being a new customer. She can play dumb if they tell her that they already served that address in the past... she can say she's a tenant, just moved in, and doesn't know the previous tenant who died.

If they still hassle you, just switch her services to someone else. Rogers is the bottom of the barrel anyhow so you can't do worse!

The POA becomes void on the persons death. The will shows who the executor of the estate is. Still, seems overly official to change who is on the bill for cable. Would not be sending a will to rogers. Move up the food chain at Rogers to find someone who will change the name on the bill. The death certificate should be good if they really need some document.

Agree with King....
just cancel the Account..then open a new one
I paid a friends rogers bill a few times and all they needed was her acct # ...No problem
funny how if you just want to give them money ...no hassles ..but a paperwork shuffle and you get grief!

Fair enough. Certainly wouldn't send the will, but might make arrangements to show it. The death certificate should be sufficient.

My condolences
Legally speaking they only need death certificate as a former manager for them I can tell you that's the oy documents they need. I'm almost a 100% sure the person you spoke to mixed up the two documents. That being said companies do have a legal right to ask for certain documents to make sure the client has passed away and it's not a fraud. I know that might sound insensitive but it's part of managing risk for companies. However as I said death certificate is all that is required in your case. You should also be able to cancel any contract services with out any fees

Call them, tell them you're going to cancel your father's account because he's deceased, unless they can transfer the name to your moms. If they request for the will...just cancel it. It works wonders.

WTF does the will have to do with transferring utilities to the surviving spouse?

The death certificate makes more sense.

Sorry for your loss.

You should cancel it anyways. As soon as you threaten to leave they will counter with a much better offer for their services. Tell them you got a better offer from Bell.

to the OP, sorry for your loss.

I tried that with bell. I told them that I'm going else where and they just said sorry you feel that way and hung up lol. Teksavvy is cheaper;

Your first mistake was telling you told them you 'were' going elsewhere.

Absolutely. The Death Certificate (from a funeral home) might even mention the legal rep or executor.

what are you supposed to say?
Say something like, 'with what you're telling me I find have to begin to consider other alternatives that I'm being given'. They know what they are and will try to change your mind. Much easier to keep a customer than try to regain one.

Never send the original Will to anyone that requests it (minus when it is couriered for probate). What they are actually asking for is a notarized copy of the Will. Essentially they are wanting it to see who is the executor. It will say that on a death certificate (it should anyways) but if their policy is to see a Will they probably won't budge.

Take the original Will to your lawyer and ask for a notarized copy. Most places will do it for a small fee or even free. To save time and money, you should probably ask for 3 copies because you are going to deal with this again, especially when it comes to anything financial. You could also get notarized copies of the death certificate too, it sometimes works out cheaper than getting them from the funeral home. Anything notarized is basically as strong as an original document. It is a lawyer stating they have seen the original and made a copy and they are swearing that the two documents are the same.

As far as Rogers knows, he's still alive.

Call back and say he's sick in the hospital and can't call or sign any documents. Ask how to transfer stuff to Mom's name.

They will tell you they need the POA and you can send it to them.

Yes, not legally binding and they could "void" the transfer if your Mom ever complained and said it was invalid. But that's not going to happen.

Screw Rogers.. ask them the simplest question requiring the least paperwork, and only give that to them.

An easier option is to just call up, say you are your Dad, and answer his security questions (which you probably know the answer to.. or your Mom will know for sure). Then say you want to "transfer services to your wife's name". Done.
