We all know why Il Mago was the No. 1 pick. Brian Colangelo is of Italian descent, his No. 2 Maurizio Gerradini was a veteran manager of Serie A, for them the pick made sense.

Yet the Nets match up well against the Raps but forget about an aging Kevin Garnett being able to dominate Jonas Valinciunas. The Latvian has been learning as he goes along and he isn't afraid of getting physical - unlike Il Mago.

Don't blame Colangelo and this Italian thing ... Jonas wasn't Italian ...

Let's face it ... In the history of the NBA draft ( past 15 years ) ... Big men are often the hardest to gage .... Greg Oden ( I know injury but he got picked over Durant ... Darko Miličić .. Hasheem Thabeet .. Kwame Brown .. Michael Olowokandi ..

I agree physically Jonas can dominate KG now, but I bet KG is gonna talk a bunch of smack and it'll get under Jonas' skin and he'll pick up dumb fouls, get in foul trouble and sit on the bench for extended periods, especially in his first playoff series.

Plus the refs aren't going to give him nearly as many calls as KG, especially if he throws his hands up in the air like he always does. It's gonna be a learning experience, let's hope he learns quickly.

I think Jonas has gotten smarter,('cept 4 the DUI), I think it was after the last time he was up against KG, Jonas said to the effect, I just chose not to understand English tonight.

I'd like to ask if you guys see a potential problem that could cause the team to lose a close game in the dying seconds, and that's the inbound play. Too often I've seen this team having problems putting the ball inbound when the other team is pressing hard. Experience tips heavily in favour of the Nets and this one particular aspect really worries me.

Ironically I believe the Raps won a game against the Nets when they picked off an inbound play, but in the playoffs can the young Raps handle the pressure ?

As for the Garnett trashing talking, JV needs just to concentrate on the game, and perhaps a little talk back in Lithuanian will effectively counter the tactic.

That would be great, but unfortunately the playoffs don't work that way. Raps ain't the 2005 Suns with Nash running the point.

Tough first game today. They have to win it to keep their chances reasonable.

There are a couple of previews on NBA.com. First one hardly mentions the Raptors - almost entirely about the Nets. Second one more balanced but most of the pundits favoured the Nets because of their much greater experience.

I read a real long winded preview of the series on Yahoo yesterday. His bottom line was Raps in 7!

Watching the Raps vs Da Bums (old name of Brooklyn Dodgers) and all I can say is I miss Il Mago...running and swerving from cascading boiling fat.

Yes, they had the jitters but they look good. I hope Hansbrough continues to get into KG's face. He should eat a garlic clove before doing so.

Some Bad Dudes with a truckload of RINGS schooled the Drake Bobby-Soxers today, baby...
And the game was actually a blowout with the Nets going 4-24 from 3 pt land.

As for JV, he's been playing with grown men since he was 12 years old...
Joanie needs to stop constant whining/complaining, stop making faces, and do what it takes to just win, baby.

After a pretty poor start Raptors made it a close game until the last minute.

Still it's only one game so they can still believe, but that loss makes it more difficult.

Win or lose, this has been an excellent season for the Raptors just a pity they ended up with the Nets.

Now it's up to Coach Casey to make the adjustments!
They got to be more creative with Demar .. He had zero easy looks at the basket ...

Wow did the ex Kings players carry this group ..

Jonas did everything you could ask for a young big nan ... Those Refs put their whistles away in the 4th quarter and Raps got zero calls ..

It's so obvious that the Raptors needed a back up center to relieve Jonas. Wish they had addressed that. T. Ross really needs to step up too.

Think Landry Fields should be placed on Paul Pierce next game if the Nets are going to play him @ the 4. The Raptors did nothing unpredictable and the Nets were prepared. I believe that the Raptors were well prepared too but did not envision Pierce @ the 4. The combo of Livingston & D. Williams was quite impressive on both ends of the court.

Nets were not that impressive. Raptors should have played much better. Especially, when it came to pushing the tempo.

So disappointed!

Yeah it was a very disappointing game indeed. Vasquez had a pretty decent fourth quarter but Raps had no offensive rhythm what so ever. Derozen was cold and Lowry could have played a better game. JV was the standout for the Raps. Nets kept getting offensive rebounds and second chance opportunities. Raps defence kept them in the game as it looked like a much more lopsided game in favor of the nets despite their poor 3 point shooting

Vasquez is such a poor defensive player that he cancels himself out at best.

From the you-can't-fucking-make-this-up file...
Steve Novak entered the game for the FIRST TIME with 0:13 seconds left... and Raps down by 7.

Now what process of Deep Thinking resulted in this signature Dwane Casey decision?
Does he deliberately punish and toy with Pro Players by fucking with them like this?

I am not worried in the least. It was only playoff game one for this young team.
I think we will see a much better, more relaxed effort in game two.

Go Raps !

I'm a little disappointed because it was so easy to predict the Nets with all their experience would come in and take game one against a bunch of jittery first-timers. The Raptors have been defying expectation all season, so I was hoping they could come out and take game one and set the tone.

By the way, the shot clock stops working and the PA guy has to let players know how much time is remaining? Are you kidding me? How does that happen? And we wonder why the Raps aren't shown more on national TV?
