Video Surveillance - Maybe I am Naive?

Hotel lobby or condo lobby, no problem, you can be there for whatever reason so cameras are not that big of a deal. the lobby of any luna or cmj spa, you are there for one reason. as was said earlier, the issue of cameras in the establishment could be that much more of a problem. There was always a high expectation of discretion and privacy either explicitly stated or implicitly ensured at these spas, but clearly discretion and privacy includes video taping you???? To answer CMJs question why I would sign up in the first place and fill out a form....well I was naive enough to believe in your discretion and respect for privacy that you claimed and I was unaware that I was being video taped. simply put, I was lied to and will no longer trust a company that treats their clients like this. I could care less that it is the norm in the business now, that is not what was presented when I joined nor was it ever mentioned to me at any point. I had to find out about it on this site.

I guess the big red sticker on the front of CMJ door that says you are being recorded just happened to go into invisible mode when you walked in... repeatedly? Sounds like a witch hunt to me... If you think your own ignorance can be blamed on CMJ and gives you a reason to attack them and call them liars, Ill call a spade a spade and say this is nothing more then a smear campaign. The ladies at CMJ are a class act and are hands down the best place in Ottawa.

I have 2 questions for CMJ or dynomyte or possibly another reader of this thread regarding an important detail about signing up for membership at CMJ: When filling out the application form, does CMJ expect prospective members to provide their real names, addresses, etc.? Does CMJ look at ID?

I am just curious.

Why don't you just contact CMJ or better yet, go in for the initial consultation and find out. You've got nothing to lose and EVERYTHING to gain. Take it from me, its a painless process and the benefits outweigh any fictional myths being fabricated by the goons on here. I am sure many others will agree with me.

Well over a week has passed and I still haven't heard from you to cancel your membership. No calls no emails - so I tend to agree with mmmgood that this is nothing more then an attempt to slander and scare people away from CMJ.

May I humbly suggest that you just focus on your own business rather then constantly trying to interfere with mine, and a few of my other friends. We could all sit in a library and create an abundance of fake handles too if we wanted - however I just don't have the time. CMJ had another record breaking year for growth and we only have time to focus on remaining on top and being the standards for professionalism, erotic innovation and keeping our over two thousand members happy :)

With that being said, for any of our actual members who have any concern over the camera/security system at CMJ - please pick up the phone, or email us so we can address your concerns and see if we can come to some sort of compromise to ensure your continued support and of course your continued pleasure :)

Thank you so much - this has been a great thread, however due to the fact that it went in a misfortunate direction, I will not be participating any further but please feel free to PM me if you need to clarify anything

Please don't take my refusal to cancel my membership as evidence of slander. Nothing I said was untruthful. I did not know that you were videotaping clients, you led me to believe otherwise, I choose not to return to your place of business. None of that is untrue. At no point were you even a target of mine. We have engaged in a conversation and disagreed about whether or not video taping patrons was a violation of privacy or a deterrent to business. My comments were directed at all agencies that videotape and since you openly admitted to doing so with your business, then yes your company is included in my dissatisfaction of companies that choose to videotape. However, I never intended to make my comments (and this thread) solely about your company.

I am glad that your company is doing so well as I had some great experiences there myself, but I have made the point that I no longer intend to give my business to any company who video tapes their clients especially when they led their clients to believe otherwise.

This has nothing to do with fake handles or visits to the library. It is a discussion forum where people chat about the industry that your company caters too. Sometimes companies benefit from the publicity that forums like this generate and sometimes they get exposed. Even at that, I did not expose anything, but simply expressed my disdain for the practices of companies that choose to present themselves as discrete and private when, in reality, they videotape. You exposed your own company by defending the practice and explaining why you have chosen to participate in the practice of videotaping. You did so on the very discussion board that you now criticize for the anonymity that it provides. It seems to me that you and your company has a difficult time accepting that some people choose to remain private on this board and when they participate in the industry itself!

mmmgood,

I too just call a spade a spade and this is by no means a witch hunt. I never noticed any sign on the door as you say so I will take your word that it exists. Does not change the fact that they say one thing and do another. And by they, I mean all agencies that promise discretion and privacy and then videotape you. So perhaps I was ignorant to the signs that are apparently there, but I can tell you quite certainly, I would not have anticipated any signs indicating videotaping as I was told that the company takes discretion and privacy very seriously. Now that I know this was not the truth (or am no longer ignorant as you put it) then I will not be taking my business there any longer. That is all I have been saying all along. It is not an attack, witch hunt, or any other sort of vendetta that you seem to want to make it look like in order to try to play the "hero" of the board!

.... Even as the previous laws stood, having your image recorded in a spa in Canada was relatively benign, compared to say the USA's police state.
A little off topic here, but if you think the U.S. is bad, take a look at Britain. There's a camera on every street corner it seems.
All those cameras have had some good results however in providing criminal evidentiary material.

But, back on topic - I wonder if any of the spas have ever had to hand-over their daily recordings to police as part of an investigation.
Can the police seize the recordings for instance as part of a raid? Didn't this happen to ALO a few years ago in Gatineau?

The charge was being "found in a bawdy house". Key is you actually have to be in at the time to get charged under the old laws.

Two fairly well known spas in York region (where municipality wanted no more spas) went down in 2005 and 2007. They did use video surveillance like most spas -- no issues ever came from that. The people that were there at time of raid only were impacted.

I am not suggesting that any spas or clubs locally are in danger under that law. Point is use of surveillance had no impact on charges... there is nothing legally wrong with being on camera or even there at a prior date.

When someone is busted they can seize any on site assets as far as I know... for asset value. This can include tables or any equipment.

Gatineau incident was not a busting was more like food to media, they took a camera yeah a webcam lol that they girls used to have in each computer at spa... webcams dont record. As a matter of fact ALO never got any charges.

Yes we do have security cameras, 2 years ago one of our locations got arm robbed, so I think they are neccesary for everyones safety. Even streets have cameras at corners

Replying to my own post. When I wrote this, I wasn't referring to LE issue. I was pointing out to privacy issue where your recorded image might be viewed by others that might know you. What possible reason(s) can you explain that you are in well known rub-and-tub spas? No deniability here.
But how many times has footage from a spa ever been shown in some form of media, for somebody that was doing nothing but getting a service at a spa. Never from my recollection.

I do remember one time in Toronto where they showed pictures of armed robbers in a spa lobby as part of a crime alert. But that is all they showed.

Based on history no reason to believe surveillance poses any risk to customers from this perspective.

Compare it to risks that exist when you get involved in any aspect of the industry -- from browsing slip up / phone calls / explaining time away / maybe being followed to a strange location... I don't see why people are really harping on this basically non existent risk. JMO.
