A reminder http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows/end-support-help

As a result, after April 8, 2014, technical assistance for Windows XP will no longer be available, including automatic updates that help protect your PC. Microsoft will also stop providing Microsoft Security Essentials for download on Windows XP on this date.

If you continue to use Windows XP after support ends, your computer will still work but it might become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. Also, as more software and hardware manufacturers continue to optimize for more recent versions of Windows, you can expect to encounter greater numbers of apps and devices that do not work with Windows XP.

Thanks for the update on the actual date of support termination. By now most people should have switched over, home users anyway. As a side note, as long as you don't buy too many new devices for your "old" box regarding drivers. You should be able to still print, surf the web because your internet is dependent on your web browser not so much your os. All should be good

There's also the option of switching to Linux Ubuntu OS. If you want to use both you can do a partition with a Wubi installer (very easy to setup).

This is unfortunate because Windows XP is still superior to the versions that have come after it. Still, it's not like XP will suddenly become highly vulnerable to attacks on April 9th.

Given that the default option seems to be "upgrading" to the practically unusable Windows 8, I know I'll be taking my time deciding what to do.

Never liked the WUBI version because it runs inside of Windows. If M$ farks up you lose both OSs.

For this reason I always prefered doing a dual boot system which is very easy to do now. A dual boot gives you two totally independent OSs. If one farks up you always have the other.

W7 is definably better than XP.
W8 isn't really that bad either. Just hit the desktop icon and it looks/runs a lot like W7.

Older PCs are definitely not garbage!
They are perfect candidates to install and learn Linux, which will run better than any Windows OS.
It is a perfect opportunity to break free from the grasp of M$ or even a more pricey Mac.

It's nice being FREE!!!.....

A friend installed Windows 7 on my computer and there is a popup saying it is an illegal version. What to do?

Did I hear that Microsoft is offering money to XP users to switch to Windows 8? How, why, where, when, etc.?

Yes they've resorted to bribery to try and kill XP. It has survived through two different O/S releases and IT has clung to it despite Microsofts attempts to kill it earlier. They kept suggesting that they would pull XP support but backed down however not this time. They want to sell new O/S. I have heard that they will carry on fighting hackers & viruses against XP until April 2015.
