And once again, the view from Lebanon

Bleak future for Lebanon as Syria war enters fourth year

BEIRUT: The future outlook for Lebanon is gloomy in terms of its stability, economy and national unity as the war in Syria enters its fourth year next week with no end in sight, political analysts said.

They said that the bloody conflict in Syria has deepened national divisions, heightened sectarian tensions, threatened Lebanon’s security and stability, put the country’s power-sharing pact in jeopardy, and encouraged Al-Qaeda-linked groups to use Lebanese territory to implement their militant agendas.

The war in Syria, which has killed more than 140,000 people and forced millions from their homes, has also left dire consequences on Lebanon’s ailing economy as the cash-strapped country struggles to grapple with the heavy burden of more than 1 million Syrian refugees who have left for safety to Lebanon, the analysts said.

“The political, economic and security situation was badly affected by the war in Syria because we got involved in the war there politically and militarily,” Abdallah Bou Habib, Lebanon’s former ambassador to the United States, told The Daily Star.

Hezbollah affiliated gunmen attack police trying to arrest suspects in a stone throwing attack on checkpoint.

Hmm. Stone throwing attack on checkpoint, police attacked while trying to make arrests. I'm sure the usuals will be along any moment now to excuse Hezbollah from attacking police and blaming the Lebanese government for trying to keep order.

No, they just reprint the same hearsay you parrot. The agreement has never been released. Try again.
The NYT has staked their reputation on it being true. You lose. And really, you are a pathetic clown trying to argue against the facts.

Where do they say that they stake their reputation on hearsay?

Here is the fact that the Times has confirmed:

"The accord with the P.L.O., known as the Cairo Agreement, was signed in the Egyptian capital in 1969 by Yasir Arafat and Gen. Emile Boustany, then commander of the Lebanese Army. It allowed the guerrillas to establish military bases in Lebanon and conduct cross border operations against Israel."

That is what they have staked their reputation on. Let me know if they retract it. Until then fuck off.

The agreement has never been released. It's nothing but hearsay.

I notice that you can't support your claim that they staked their reputation on this hearsay.

If it were hearsay, they wouldn't print it as fact, which means that they were able to confirm it. The New York Times stake their reputation on all the news they report.

Only hearsay. The fact is that the agreement has never been released. Even the article does not attempt to say they have access to the agreement. Why? Because they don't have access to the agreement. It has never been released.

You might have a case if they said they had access to the agreement but they have clearly scrupulously avoided making such a claim.

Try again.

Hmm, who to believe? Gryfin, who lies and deceives constantly? Or one of the best respected newspapers in the world?

Clearly the NYT has confirmed the following as fact, through their extensive network of sources, since they printed it as unqualified fact in accordance with their impressive journalistic standards:

You can fuck off now, go argue with established fact somewhere else, you are a clown.

Only hearsay. That's why the NYT does not claim to have access to the agreement. It has never been released. That is a fact and absolutely nowhere do they say they have access to the report. They don't even provide any source for what is hearsay. It's quite poor journalism.

You have no idea how they confirmed that. Whether it was by obtaining the agreement, whether through contacts in the Lebanese or Palestinian government doesn't matter.

It is FACT.

It looks like Lebanon's attempt at a cabinet isn't doing so well with March 8 parties (which includes Hezbollah) threatening to pull out unless cabinet agrees on a policy statement.

It seems the sticking point is the March 14 bloc wants the 'right of resistance' under the control of the state while the March 8 bloc favour political factions keeping their armies.

And more Syria related violence.

Ten-year-old girl killed in Tripoli clashes

TRIPOLI, Lebanon: A 10-year-old girl and at least one other person were killed in Tripoli Thursday, after fighting erupted between supporters and opponents of the Syrian government in a further sign that the political impasse has negatively impacted security in Lebanon’s second-largest city.

The clashes, which intensified Thursday night, erupted between supporters of Syrian President Bashar Assad in the predominantly Alawite neighborhood of Jabal Mohsen and rivals in the mainly Sunni district in Bab al-Tabbaneh after Walid Barhoum, from Jabal Mohsen, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on motorcycles. The incident occurred near Makhoul Hospital in the city at around 11:30 a.m.

Today's news.

Rockets from Syria kill one in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley

And for exceed's benefit, this time it was a Shia area that was the target.

Tripoli death toll hits five, no letup in clashes

TRIPOLI, Lebanon: Armed clashes between supporters and opponents of Syrian President Bashar Assad raged in Tripoli for a second day Friday, bringing the death toll to five, with no signs that a truce would be reached anytime soon.

The fighting, which has left 45 wounded, intensified in the evening, after sporadic gunfire persisted during the day.

And the cabinet reaches a confusing "compromise" by stating both viewpoints.
The policy statement says:
“Based on the state’s responsibility in preserving Lebanon’s sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and the safety of its citizens, the Cabinet stresses the state’s duty and efforts to liberate the Shebaa Farms, the Kfar Shouba hills and the Lebanese part of the village of Al-Ghajar through all legitimate means,”
Saying that the state is the ones entrusted with fighting Israel but also includes:
" right of Lebanese citizens to "resist Israeli occupation, repulse its attacks and recover occupied territories,”
http://www.dailystar.com.lb/News/Le...-compromise-policy-formula-averts-crisis.ashx
http://www.dailystar.com.lb/News/Le...zbollahs-tripartite-formula-gone-forever.ashx

So the people (read Hezbollah) are encouraged to 'resist' while at the same time the state's jurisdiction. I guess all sides will read into it what they want.

And on it goes. A terror attacks against Hezbollah and Syrian army attacking another Lebanese town.

Syria conflict fallout batters east Lebanon

BEIRUT/ARSAL, Lebanon: A suicide bomber killed at least three people, including two Hezbollah members, and wounded 11 others in the east Lebanon village of Nabi Othman Sunday night, security sources said, in what was interpreted as a direct response to the group’s joint military campaign in the Syrian city of Yabroud.

The suicide attack came as the Syrian army launched several airstrikes around the border town of Arsal, hours after gaining control of Yabroud, as fears mounted that the flocking of Syrian fighters to the town would expose it to more security incidents.

More Syrian Air Strikes on Lebanon (exceed would say it's okay because it might have been targetingrebels).

Fury as warplanes bombard areas along Lebanese border

BEIRUT: Fresh Syrian airstrikes hit Lebanon’s border areas of Arsal and Wadi Khaled Thursday, security sources said.

The attacks sparked the anger of residents and prompted officials to ask the Lebanese Army and the government to take action.

The first strike hit the area of Wadi Ajram, around five kilometers from the border, at 9 a.m., security sources told The Daily Star, adding that the size o the explosion indicated that it may have been caused by a barrel bomb. The area is located near the Bekaa Valley town of Arsal in northeast Lebanon.

Twenty minutes later, two other airstrikes hit the area of Kherbet Younin, also close to Arsal, the sources said. A further four airstrikes hit Kherbet Younin at 11:45 a.m. A Syrian child was wounded in the airstrikes.

Syrian focused clashes continue in Tripoli for an 8th day, now including attacks on the Army trying to stop the violence.

Clashes persist for eighth day in Tripoli

TRIPOLI, Lebanon: Clashes between supporters and opponents of Syrian President Bashar Assad renewed in Tripoli Thursday evening after a relatively calm day, wounding at least nine people including six Army soldiers.

Five soldiers were shot near an Army checkpoint in Deir Ammar. The soldiers were rushed to nearby hospitals in critical condition. A sixth soldier was wounded when a rocket-propelled grenade hit an Army barrack.

Three other individuals were wounded in the fighting between Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen.

Residents of the mainly Alawite Jabal Mohsen support Assad, while rivals in predominantly Sunni Bab al-Tabbaneh are sympathetic with the Syrian opposition.
