Shirley Temple, the dimpled, curly-haired child star who sang, danced, sobbed and grinned her way into the hearts of Depression-era moviegoers, has died, said publicist Cheryl Kagan. She was 85.

Temple, known in private life as Shirley Temple Black, died at her home near San Francisco.

A talented and ultra-adorable entertainer, Shirley Temple was America’s top box-office draw from 1935 to 1938, a record no other child star has come near. She beat out such grown-ups as Clark Gable, Bing Crosby, Robert Taylor, Gary Cooper and Joan Crawford.

In 1948, Shirley Temple appeared in one of her last films, "Fort Apache" with Henry Fonda, John Wayne and directed by John Ford. She was 20 years of age by then and quite lovely. Methinks the public simply didn't want to watch her to "grow up"...

...I believe she could have been one of cinema's great beauties that made the transition from child to adult actor with little effort. Alas, she became a diplomat and led a very full life.

I guess she's crossed the River Styx on the Good Ship Lollipop.

I think you are correct, Don Draper, America wasn't ready for her to grow up as her popularity took a dive as she reached adolescence. She was a beautiful woman too, which is odd, but I guess they could never get over that curly haired kid.

She may be gone but her movies will be forever reminding us of her awesome talent.
Her character annoyed the sh*t out of me, even when I was a kid. There was a smug arrogance and annoying tone to her voice that made me want to hit her with a shovel. My brother felt the same way but we never let on to our mom, who was a fan otherwise I'm guessing we would have gotten hit with a shovel..

An icon of the early years of the "talkies".
As an adult Ambassador Temple-Black also did a very good job as the Chief of Protocol (U.S. Department of State) and as United States Ambassador to Ghana, and later to Czechoslovakia.

I saw Miss Temple doing a book signing back in the mid eighties at the World Biggest Bookstore near Yonge /Dundas .She looked to be a very attractive lady and was probly in her late 50s at the time.

Ambassador Temple-Black while she was United States Ambassador to Czechoslovakia.
