Camels were here prior to the last ice age. There are still 4 cameloids in South America, the guanaco, llama, vicuña and alpaca.




While the answer given may be true, the answer is that the US army tried an experiment in 1850 where they tried to use camels as pack animals, but it did not work out as the camels did not get along with the horses, mules, dogs and soldiers. The experiment only lasted a few years and was abandoned. Some of the camels escaped and was still seen in the wild up til the 1920s.
