A novice Saanich driver says he's being punished for trying to do the right thing, after being fined for having no 'N' sign while driving his intoxicated father home from Victoria.

Evan Godo, 18, drove his father's truck into downtown Victoria around 11:45 p.m. Saturday, after his father called to say he had had too much to drink and didn't want to get behind the wheel.

On their way home, Godo was stopped at a police roadblock, where he was fined $109, because he was driving his father's truck — which had no N sign — instead of his own car, which did have a N sign.

"[I used] my Dad's truck because my car is really low on gas and at that time of night, I don't know what gas station is open and whether I'd make it on time," said Godo.

"My main concern was getting him home safe. At the time, having a little magnetized N on there wasn't my main concern at all."

Marketing student Godo says the roadblock was only manned by one police officer, who took about 10 minutes checking his license, allowing other cars to drive through without checks during this time.

"I noticed car after car driving through. As far as I was concerned [the police officer] pulled me over for my N and he was there targeting drunk drivers and trying to find drunk drivers. Who knows what could have been in those cars or anything?"

The police did not return calls for comment on Friday, but Steve Wallace of Wallace Driving School said the problem for new drivers like Godo may lie in the type of policy operated by Integrated Road Safety Units.

"It is a no–holds–barred unit. So when you get pulled over, they don't have the discretion to forgive. They have a total charge policy," said Wallace.

New drivers in British Columbia, who have already passed the road rules knowledge test, vision test and the Class 7 road test, are required to display their N sign whenever they are driving, until they pass the Class 5 road test.

Godo says he's still considering disputing the fine, although not because of the money.

"They used bad judgment, horrible judgment in fact. That judgment could have been the deciding factor in someone's life or death."

Now where is Fuji when we need him?

The Eighteen year-old is right when he said that police used bad judgment, indeed this was robotic on their part.

He's not being punished for doing the right thing, he's being punished for not following the law, which simply required him to put the N sign in his Father's vehicle. A very simple and easy task to do.

It's true that the boy was doing a good deed by driving his father home but he did break the law.

Why blame the cop for doing his job? The kid said the cop used bad judgement but the kid used bad judgement by making the cop decide what to do. The fact that other cars drove by while the cop was issuing the ticket is a moot point. Anytime a cop is checking on a driver or issuing a ticket other cars are going to drive past him.

It is called taking responsibility for your own actions and it is a shame that more kids don't understand that. Even more shameful is that many adults don't understand it either as evidenced by some of the posts here.

The self-righteous Terb driving club strikes again.

Just so people know the shade grey does exist. Some people seem incapable of seeing it.

The cop was acting as a glorified tax collector.

I was stopped by RIDE in Halton (back country road didn't even know what town I was in) I was sober but it was 3 or 4 days before my birthday and I hadn't gotten my new sticker. So there are 3 Halton cops(what a tough job they have) 2 guys and a girl. The male officers asked if I've been drinking and quickly they could tell that I hadn't. The female goes behind my vehicle and checks the sticker and then asks when my birthday is. I thought this bitch always has her eyes on the real prize. It isn't catching drunk drivers...it's collecting $$$ for the region/province.

The cop in the Victoria incident is a typical by the book asshole.

Hear what you're saying, but since they already had you stopped, it's not a bad idea to also check the validity of your sticker. It's much better than them stopping cars just because it's the month of expiry of the sticker, or not checking at all for expired stickers.

I once complained via telephone about a driver who was driving like a real asshole, also reported that his sticker was months out of date. They told me to go to a cop shop and file a report. They wouldn't act on something that was so obvious and blatant.

If you order/purchase your sticker online you can drive with an expired sticker if you have printed the paperwork showing you purchased the sticker on time.
I believe you have 10 days grace period allowing for delivery of the sticker via Canada Post.

The driver is a moron
At 11PM at night he claims was not sure which gas station were open
Really?

He has lived in the area all his life and you expect me to believe a teen is home every night by 10PM?
BS

Glad he got the ticket just for being stupid

Another genius

Ok so you have 180 days before birthday to renew your sticker
You waited until it expired (sticker is valid to your birthday) and then cry because you got a ticket?
Seriously?

Can you read? I said it was before my birthday so the sticker HAD NOT expired. I am not giving the government my $$$ any earlier than I have to.

Also where did I say that I actually got a ticket? I did not, as my sticker was still legal. Before you start sarcastically calling people a genius you might want to improve your reading comprehension.

Well Dad should definitely ante up for the cost of the ticket which I'm guessing he will given the alternatives. In the circumstances it does seem like a pretty petty bureaucratic enforcement.

I get around.
I'm glad that way back when, I got my license at 16 and there was none of this graduated legality with stickers and provisions.

But I don't see why this even made it to the national news. "Young, inexperienced driver made a small mistake, got a ticket". Probably happens all the time.
