Marchand took a cheap shot from a Penguins knee earlier in the play and in the first minute of the game Orpik threw an elbow at Eriksons head and knocked him out of the game. You don't like to see stuff like this but if you are going to take cheap shots at the Bruins you have to expect retaliation. I don't blame Thornton for standing up for his teamates who were injured by Penguin cheap shots, sad thing is Thornton will be the only one punished by the league. Note, I did not see the incident but am going by the news flashes on the Score web site.

After seeing Boychuk carted off to the hospital after a Montreal cheap shot then Lou Eriksson gets knocked out in the first minute of tonight's game on a cheap head shot by Orpik and the Neal's cheap knee to Marchant's head, no wonder Thornton lost his marbles the Bruins are not going to stand around and watch their players get injured one after the other by cheap shots. They had to put a stop to it and Thornton will be the only one to pay the price, makes you wonder what kind of clowns are running this league. If you hurt someone with a cheap shot you will more likely get off with a lesser penalty than the guy who retaliates, he gets the book tossed at him by Shanahan. It always kind of struck me as ironic that Shanahan is the "justice minister" of the NHL when he was a dirty prick himself when he played.

Here are all 3 incidents. http://www.tsn.ca/videohub/Default.aspx?collection=71&show=211793&section=Sports

Orpik's hit on Eriksson is borderline, Neal is a douche, and should/will be suspended, but what Thornton did is straight up assault.

Glad to see the Bruins came back to win in the final 2 minutes.

lol..........the Bruins have been laying out cheap shots for years . I guess it sucks when they are on the receiving end .

In an interview that ran on ESPN.com this week, Thornton was asked about the future of fighting in the NHL, Thornton positioned himself as a proponent of "the code."

"I've been a firm believer my whole life that what goes around comes around," Thornton told ESPN. "If you're one of those guys that suckers someone when they're down or you go after somebody that doesn't deserve it or isn't the same category as you, that will come back and bite you at some point, too."

Does this fall into that category and, if so, will it come back and bite him?

The Thornton punch is a good example how the force of a punch is magnified when a players head is against the ice. Makes it a lot harder to dissipate the blow.

Neal well come on as Kathleen said that could have been a career ender right there. Throw the book at him and make an example. I don't care if he is usually a good citizen.

I didn't see anything wrong with the Orpik hit other than Eriksson came close but I don't believe he touched the puck. Feel bad for Eriksson though, he's had a really tough year physically.

One thing for sure the Bruins are a really hard team to play against and have no parallel inn their conference.

Orpik could have accepted Thornton's challenge to fight earlier in the game after his cheap head shot on Eriksson. As soon as Orpik chickened out and refused to fight he becomes someone who "deserves" it as Thornton was quoted as saying. He didn't deserve to go to the hospital but he has to accept the fact Thornton was going to make sure Orpik got his.

Just asking,

Is any play resulting in a player hurt a cheap shot? Coz a lot of time, when people say elbow to the head, I do not see the elbow. On the Steve Moore's hit on Naslund all these years ago, people were crying elbow but I still do not see an elbow. Isn't an elbow lifting the elbow BEFORE contact and not AFTER contact on the follow through? I couldn't see if Orpik's elbow was lifted after or before the hit but he did not deserve what happened.

Anyway, Neal on Marchand could have been an accident. Thornton was clearly intentional. It wouldn't surprise me if Thornton gets 20 games.

Like Thornton said what goes around comes around. Orpik has a history of throwing out cheap shots and not dropping the gloves when challenged. This is what Thornton is talking about, don't go out dropping guys with cheap shots and not expect to get it back.

If that's what he said, then Thornton "deserves" to be suspended even more games. You cannot blind side someone after the play like that. Imagine a league where people accept hitting people from behind after the play. That's crazy!

Then I guess Thornton would have no problem if someone hits him from behind after the play and send him to the hospital. Just coz someone won't fight doesn't mean that you get to assault him. He does not get to dictate the rules.

Cheap shot? I don't think so.

Orpik is not suspended, Neal will have a phone hearing, and Thornton has an in person hearing.

So, if we're measuring each act on the 'Cheapworthiness Scale', Orpiks hit doesn't register, Neal wins something off the 1st shelf (no more than 5 games) and Thornton rings the bell.

My guess as to what he will get? 10-15.
What I think he should get, is 20-25.
What he committed was assault, plain and simple.

If you are going to dish out cheap shots as part of your game then you have to expect to get it tossed back at you. You can't run around knocking guys out like the Pens did tonight and not expect Boston to retaliate. The refs also didn't seem to have much control over this game.

You're not referring to Orpik on Eriksson as a cheap shot, are you? That's a Marchand/Lucic staple, must be okay when you're wearing yellow and black.

Saxon is looking at this with Bruins coloured glasses on I'm afraid.
I'm not a Bruins fan at all, yes Thornton went way over the line and he knows the league is going to toss the book at him but his teamates will stand by him and yes I think Orpik's hit on Eriksson was a head shot. The guy is out with a concussion so obviously he was hit in the head which is supposed to be against the rules.
