Already there. Is Libya heading for a civil war? Or, are they already in a civil war?
The situation remains better than Iraq.Already there.
Some of us at the time said - let's give this some second thought.
The Italian Government is expressing real concern as to the increasingly deteriorating situation in Libya.
Iraq and Libya need a strongman dictator to hold everything together. Afghanistan need the Taliban to keep the country in check. The population in those countries need another X years (more or less) before they are ready for democratic self-rule. Egypt is lucky they have the Army to hold the country together.Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan. The Americans seem to have a knack for deposing foreign governments and then leave those countries in a complete mess.
....... Egypt is lucky they have the Army to hold the country together........
What he said......The elected president remains in jail, the coup plotters continue their illegal rule. Laws are being enacted to eliminate democratic rights, including the right to protest, as well as the right to freely form political parties. Political prisoners continue to be held without charge, people who murdered protesters have not been brought to justice. Stalinist style show trials are being implemented to put opposition figures to death or life in prison.
Fezzan and Cyrenaica have both recently declared their autonomy from Libyan "central" gov't (which, 2 years after Ghadaffy's death, still flounders). Not outright secession, but it seems to be heading towards breakup rather than consolidation. There's just toooo many rival faction, tribes, militias, etc waging low-level action against each other, and the gov't security forces aren't able to get a handle on the situation without substantial amounts of outside assistance (which isn't being offered). When Colin Powell said "you broke it, you buy it" about Iraq, IMO that same should hold true with Libya, as without NATO's involvement, ousting Qaddafi would most likely NOT have happened. Is Libya heading for a civil war? Or, are they already in a civil war?
