In the Canadian opera company performance of La Boheme the translation of the landlord has him saying It's my hobby. I fell off my seat laughing. Someone at COC has a sense of humour. Definitely not a traditional translation. But it made me start thinking about who first used the term hobbyist.

Men dont like to call themselves "Johns" or "whoremongers".....so to give themselves a better "feel good" image of what they are doing. Sorry but thems the facts. Same as why the ladies are called SP's or service providers. Warm and cozy. Men dont want to be called Johns and the ladies dont like being called Hookers. It is as simple as that. By putting a nice shiny wrapper on the activity, i.e. Hobby, it pacifies a certain type......
As an aside, I am not attacking the activity and think it should be legalized, and have participated.....just never felt the urge to mask what I was doing by stating I "hobbied"....I was paying for sex as any John has done and will do and might considering visiting hookers/prostitutes in the future again. Who knows.

The line is "È uno svago, qualche donnetta allegra...". One of the more contemporary translations of Svago is 'hobby'.

Dictionary.com defines 'hobby' as: An activity or interest pursued for pleasure or relaxation and not as a main occupation. I think that sums it up pretty well.
