If all of the valid Social Insurance Numbers in Canada were issued, what percentage of SINs would be consecutively numbered?
I get 2%.

The ninth digit of a Social insurance Number is determined by the first eight numbers:

Multiply the second, fourth, sixth, and eighth digits by two. If the product of the multiplication is a two digit number, add the two digits together, to get a single digit; ie 2 x 8 = 16; 1 +6 = 7. Add the total of the first, third, fifth and seventh digits to the total from multiplying the second, fourth, sixth, and eighth digits. Subtract this sum from the next highest multiple of ten greater than or equal to the sum from the first eight digits to obtain the ninth digit.

Example:

If first eight digits of a SIN are 418 623 05, the last digit must be 4:

4 x 1 = 4
1 x 2 = 2
8 x 1 = 8
6 x 2 = 12 1 + 2 = 3
2 x 1 = 2
3 x 2 = 6
0 x 1 = 0
5 x 2 = 10 1 + 0 = 1

4 + 2 + 8 + 3 + 2 + 6 + 0 + 1 = 26

30 - 26 = 4

Consecutive valid SINs can only result when the last digit is 0 or 9, (20% or the time), and the preceding or following number is valid, (10% of the time).
