Marriot Montreal Airport - Don't ever stay here

Rip off alert.

So I am flying out of Mtl tomorrow morning bright and early. Client recommends the Marriot in Trudeau Airport as a convenient place to stay (given I have to catch an early flight)

So I call them up.

Tonight is $248.00 (CAA Rate) - a little high for "just passing through", but whatever.

But the return trip later in the week is $309.00. Now that's verging on stupid. But I made the reservation figuring I'd have some time to figure out an alternative.

This place is fucked.

Security elevator - you need to wave your room card in the elevator to get up to the floors. (So definitely NOT SP friendly) I wasn't planning to partake as I'm tire out, but I hate that shit. So I'm hungry and want to order a pizza, but I have to go down to the fucking lobby to meet delivery guy. That sucks.

Now here's the kicker - $248.00 - you'd think that the Wifi would be free. But no, it's $15.95 up charge. I hate that.

I stayed at an amazing Marriot in San Francisco for $89.00 a night and everything was included. But here, it's ridiculous.

Conversely, to stay at the Sheraton at YYZ is maybe about $120 a night.

Anyway, I'll definitely be cancelling my reservation for later this week. Fuck convenience. I'll take a cab to the Queen Elizabeth and it will include free Wifi and be a lot cheaper and none of this secure elevator BS.

actually, most of the name-brand hotels charge for wifi, while their value brands include it as part of the room rate (i.e. you'll be charge for wifi at a Marriott, but not at a Fairfield Inn ... same corporation)

i think they figure if you're staying there, you're good for it

i'm suprised the marriott in san fran gave you the wifi for free; how long ago was that? was it a courtyard, perhaps?

Must be 99% of the people staying there are just passing through, so the hotel knows how to soak you since they have a captive clientèle. The Sheraton Gateway inside Pearson Terminal 3 is just as ridiculously expensive.

3 stars typically free WIFI (like Marriott Residence Inn).... every 4 star I have booked on Priceline charged extra for Wifi.

Women business travellers have, asked for different things in hotel design over the years. At the top, is security. You better get used to it.

Every single hotel I've stayed at in the last little while has asked if I want two keys.........

If you have a lady visiting (either pro or non-pro) and you're not in the mood to meet for a drink in the bar first, just put the second key in an envelope, and leave it at the front desk.

Seems easy to me....

16 bucks for wifi seems about the average for a high end hotel....They have to make up all that money they lost from you not buying a 16 dollar pay-per-view porn movie.

Pizza, I have no answer. I never eat in my room.

The price is stupid for a room you likely won't spend any time enjoying. Airport hotels are usually places you arrive late, sleep, and leave early. Not getting much value out of the amenities.

Hotels where lots of SP work are the best. They all have free wifi. I frequently linger in their lobbies with a laptop after SP session, usually get to see other girls walking by.

Fuck the Air Canada Club restaurant. I'd rather go to Harbour 60.

As for hotels requiring room keys, there are a few of them in the GTA. Never had a problem when it involved an SP I was seeing, although easier not to have that security measure.

If you have an early flight then the airport Sheraton or Aloft at Montreal airport are alternatives. 5 min away by shuttle

Fairmont gives you free wifi if you are member of the President's club. (All it takes is to sign up.)

I actually like the Queen Liz when staying in Montreal on business. I know it's not the swankiest hotel in mtl, but I like it. And I can usually get a room there for a buck 50 or so. (And the wifi is free.)

I'll take the QE over the Airport Marriot any day, any time.

I've stayed at the germain in mtl as well and the wifi was free. Germain out distances both the QE and the Marriot.

In Europe this summer, stayed at some very 5 star hotels in Rome and the wifi was included.

Not a big fan of the key to get into the elevators, but now that you mention it, the guy did ask how many keys I wanted and I answered, "one" with a strange look. Never thought about leaving one for a friend.

What a rip off. I personally recommend Hampton Inns, never had a bad experience with them in numerous cities. They even give you a breakfast the next morning.

That whole 'charging for wifi' thing at hotels really bugs me. I get that they're trying to extract extra cash while keeping their posted rates as low as possible, but still. Thankfully my Toronto favourite doesn't charge extra, and if I'm staying anywhere that does, I can just use my phone as a hotspot and not have to use the wifi at all.
