i think we can acknowledge by now that when a police officer shoots, it's to kill. so, next step. did he need to shoot? doesn't appear so at all. there has been suggestions that this was suicide-by-cop. seems likely given the young mans life situation. unless he left a note, this is just wild speculation. so why'd the officer shoot? we'll never know but my thought is his adrenaline was off-the-scale and he made a bad mistake. who was in-charge? looked like nobody. the police force has lots to fix. i doubt if Chief Blair after his G20 lie is the one to do it.

Okay, thanks.

Not quite correct when 6 more bullets are pumped into the guy after he's fallen down twitching. (The cop still had his gun aimed at the fallen victim demanding he drop his knife but I doubt he was still a threat, yet he pumped double the # of rounds in him).
Well GPIDEAL, you've seen enough movies where the Terminator villain is riddled with a hundred bullets and still a "fallen-twitching" killing machine ...

After exiting a window? From a handgun? What type of bullet? Won't most of the lethal energy dissipate half a km away?

A pistol is only effective out to a maybe thirty metres because you just cannot aim it beyond that distance but the bullet had enough energy to travel a couple of kilometres. I don't know how much energy it would lose going through glass but hand waving it seems like it would easily continue five hundred more metres.

Lots of factors come into play, but if fired at level, a 'typical' 9mm bullet will travel 2500 metres before hitting the ground. Velocity at impact will still be about 350 ft/sec (vs over 1100 ft/sec as it exits the muzzle). Regardless.... ouch! When fired at an upward angle, it will travel further. Maximum effective range is about 25 - 30 yards, but that is for accuracy, not velocity. All that to say, in an urban setting like this, the bullet could have exited the street car and hit the buildings across the street at a lethal velocity.
Really? Jesus that's powerful.

I think it was more like Tony Montana in Scarface (after doing a few big lines).

Seriously though, I'm not sure if he was unconscious after the 1st 3 bullets, unless the cop who shot him freaked out that Sammy was still holding his knife. Did you notice the screaming and yelling by that cop (or a cop) in front of the streetcar door? Something's up that's for sure.

That murdering cannibal was Vince W. Li who was remanded to a high-security mental health facility. The unfortunate victim was Tim McLean. Vince Li was subdued by taser, although he was 'shot' when he tried to flee the bus through a broken window, so not sure if he was still armed. But for TPS to taser Sammy after he's pumped with 9 bullets, it sure will make them look bad!
Yes, he was tasered as he tried to escape.

"On July 31, 2008, at 1:30 a.m., the suspect attempted to escape from the bus by breaking through a window. The RCMP arrested Li soon afterward. He was shot with a Taser twice, handcuffed and placed in the back of a police cruiser. Parts of the victim's body, placed in plastic bags, were retrieved from the bus, while his ear, nose and tongue were found in Li's pockets. The victim's eyes and a part of his heart were never recovered and are presumed to have been eaten by Li."

This guy was scarier than the kid and yet the cops handled the situation effectively without danger to themselves or other passengers nearby.

But the tazer was never used first before shots were fired? I have to read up on this, I know. I should read before asking what is probably some stupid questions. Sorry.
It's not a stupid question and perhaps one of the most important ones. Maybe they didn't have a taser ready at the precise moment. Or maybe they were afraid that he would not be subdued in time or enough by the tazer, so that he would stab someone in the process (tasers don't work instantaneously like real guns).

Definitely scarier, but he wasn't taunting the cops or shouting. I think when he tried to break through the window, it was the perfect opportunity for cops to taser him because he could not lunge at them.

What type weapon a semi-automatic Pistol or a revolver? How quickly were the shots fired?

People who have never, never even been in a shot - don't shoot simulation have no idea.

The bus was surrounded, any direction this guy was running was towards or near a cop. These cops were obviously better trained because by admission by similar minded comments here - this guy would have been shot 10 times by the same petrified TO cop. Neutralizing a threat doesn't have be with deadly force.

The more I thing about it, the worse it's looking for the cop...
Yup.
The police are going to have to let him be charged, I expect. He acted on his own, even if he did shout a warning it doesn't justify him shooting a kid who poses no immediate risk to himself or the public.
And shooting to kill could make it manslaughter or homicide if the kid was already down after 3 shots fired at him.

Geez

I am so disgusted by this whole thing. Those assholes who make over $100K a year assassinated someone. Toronto is so fucked.
The money makes no difference but when you pay this amount to pay these useless pricks you would think they would develop constructive ways to deal with disturbed people.
I used to wave to cops and when I was a kid I thought being a cop was the ultimate.
Grew up. Went into the armed forces and now a professional.
This is the most brutal, insane and ridiculous use of force I have seen in Western society.
These protests are justified.
Whoever that Cop is needs to be in the general population in Kingston Pen soon.

Think I will state again that this was ONE cop. The rest did NOT fire. Painting the entire force with the same brush really isn't fair. Even the family of the young man have released a statement to that effect.

I do understand that emotions are running very high at the moment, and agree that charges should be laid judging from the information presently out there. But there is a lot of information that hasn't been released yet.

The investigation will probably take about 2 months. They have to sift through 22 witness statements from police as well as several videos.

The family is calling for calm response. We as citizens sypothetic to them should respect their wishes.

Seems very over the top for someone with a knife IMHO. The guy was in a confined area, a bunch of cops outside... lots of other options like pepper spray or tazer..and they pump a bunch of rounds into the guy. Seriously WTF.. these guys seem too anxious to kill someone.
If I were one of those cops, I'd have done exactly the same thing.

Don't judge until you've been in those shoes and had some asshole come at you with a knife

Police are trained to protect the public from armed and dangerous people.
Whether Yatim was disturbed or not meant very little to the police during
the confrontation.

Which one of those cops , the one who did the shooting or the 10 + who stood around confused ?

And at what point did the kid " come at him with a knife " , he was in a street car , by himself .

They should have offered the kid donuts and coffee and let him sleep it off all night in the street car

So guess the cruisers should be equipped with fold out couches, so the bad guy can lie down and tell every one about his trouble youth.
