Some people blindly believe in German cars quality. Did you know the current BMW are designed by an American? Chris Bangle is the name.

I once owned a bmw and actively involved in the DIY community. Old bmw enthusiasts hated Bangle. European luxury cars maintenance cost is unbearble unless you have a second car it some times has to sit in shop waiting for parts for over a week.

Base Chevy Impala: V6 engine puts out 262 hp
Base Audi A6: I4 engine puts out 211 hp

I think a lot of you guys are over-valuing the Audi.
I don't know where you got your Impala stats, but I would like to see them. However, based on what you wrote two things come to mind:

1) The Impala you quote above has two more valves than the Audi. Therefore, of course it will have more horsepower. Put those two extra valves into the Audi, and I bet it would have more horsepower. In fact, the fact that the Audi gets close enough horsepower to a V6 Impala says that either the Audi is a good engine and/or the Impala is a poor one. Also, it is likely that the Audi will get better fuel economy, being a smaller engine.

2) You neglect to discuss torque, which is how fast the engine actually spins. It is equal to or more important than horsepower to determine the performance of an engine. I suspect that the Audi's torque is significantly higher than that of the Impala.

yeah yeah, the usual blah blah defender of elite german machines! If you want torque, please get VW GTI diesel! better yet a white cargo van will beat torque of any sports sedan!

Let's face it, the only reason you'd drive audi, bmw, mercedes is to impress chicks!

Then these Japanese and German companies are doing a great job at promoting their products. Something those Americans can learn.
I have only owned Japanese, so I cant really judge.

even if there were no chicks around, I would still want to drive a nice car. Chicks largely don't give a shit about your car anyway, as long as it's clean.

Thats exactly what I drive... Seriously... And it's why I know how important torque is. I also notice you didn't address my first point, that a 4cylinder Audi engine can produce just slightly less power than a Chevy 6

While I doubt I'd ever buy an Impala I'm seriously considering doing something I've never done, order a new car - in this case the new C7 Corvette Stingray....

262hp vs 211hp is a significant difference.

I don't know how the torque numbers compare but I'll bet they favour the Chevy V6.

That's true, though, you might make a good first impression on gold diggers, but even they only care how much money you spend on them rather than your car!

That's up to the engine design. If you want to crank out more power with less displacement you put more pressure on each cylinder, that's what turbo charger does, also you can do tricks with air intake. But regardless, it may not be a good thing for the longevity of engine. hence the saying "there is no replacement for displacement"!

Been watching that Vette also....good choice, priced well and gets decent EPA fuel economy!....:thumb:
The 2014 Stingray kinda makes that anemic Audi A6 look like a set of training wheels.....:eyebrows:
]
So it has been well established that the A6 beats the snot out of any chevy sedan. Now you should compare the "Vette to the Audi A8

Guess what Woody? :D

Good news for the Oshawa auto plant because with the Camaro ceasing production (in Canada) their future lies with the success of the Impala.

That's the Audi "R8", not the "A8". It's based on the Lamborghini Gallardo and also comes with a V10.

no doubt domestic cars are better value. But if you live in Toronto and can throw around $0.5 - $1 million just to put roof on your head, what's $100k for a car? All that horse power will get you 5km/h on Bloor st. or Don Valley Parking lot on your way to the slave farm - you call "work" each and every day :)

I was watching CTV NEWS and they had this little bit about a guy who owned over 400 old cars, some with only a couple of miles on them. Saw a 1964 Impala in that mix. That thing was a boat. Huge!
