Local social media has been buzzing today with reports that threatening letters have been sent to some local LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) individuals.

The total number of people who have received such letters is not yet known, and police are requesting the public’s assistance in their investigation.

Two of these letters – reported as having been sent to a lesbian couple in Kingston – were posted to a photo hosting website along with a transcription.

The first is a full page letter that opens with:

We are a small but dedicated group of Kingston residents devoted to removing the scourge of homosexuality in our city.

We know you and have been following you for the past several weeks and we wish for you to leave this city, before it is too late, for you. This will be the first of many reminders, each escalating to higher and higher levels of harassment and derailment.

Since we have nothing personal against you, only against your sexuality, we suggest you move to more conductive climes like Vancouver, or preferably San Francisco.

It goes on to claim that their organization is located in the ‘Deep South’ (of the U.S.), and that they have already “relocated a few people like you from the Kingston area, through a set of incentives and effective persuasion”.

The letter also attempts to convince letter recipients against reporting these threats to the police, stating “we will know about this, since we have contacts in Kingston Police.”

Not surprisingly, Kingston City Police released a statement that they are “absolutely and unequivocally” not involved or connected to the individual or group sending these letters.

The full statement released by Kingston Police this afternoon is as follows:

Regarding the hate-based and homophobic letters people are showing concern about online, we are confirming a report has been filed with Kingston Police and detectives from the Major Crime Unit are actively investigating this serious and disturbing incident. We absolutely and unequivocally are not involved or connected to this individual or group as is stated in one of the letters, and do not appreciate the association.

However, of greater priority is solving this case, caring for the safety and well-being of the complainants, determining who would write such hateful and threatening content, and for what purpose.

Anyone with first-hand information, or if you’ve received the same or similar letters, is asked to contact Detective Chris Gobeil at cgobeil@kpf.ca or at 613-549-4660 ext 6186.

The individual who posted the two letters online also added that they are the child of a lesbian mother (or couple) and defended Kingston by saying, in part:

Kingston, Ontario is a very gay-friendly city. Just this year, the city itself sponsored Pride, and raised a rainbow flag at city hall for the month of June (our pride month).

We have many gay-friendly/safe establishments and institutions in Kingston. Just this year, a very openly gay high school teacher was awarded Teacher of the Year.

As stated by police, anyone with information or has received similar correspondence is asked to contact Detective Chris Gobeil at cgobeil@kpf.ca or at 613-549-4660 ext 6186.

Disgusting!

However, if you gave it only a modicum of effort you could find cases where LGBT individuals have made threats against those who disagree with them on religious grounds.

I'm betting its a single person doing this. One stupid homophobe trying to make out like they are a group. Why the hell would a supposed US group send someone to Kingston of all places?
They will catch the neighbour who did this at some point with a bit of surveilence. It will be some loser.

Indeed. Why, I recall countless cases where LGBT people bullied religious bigots right out of town. And by "countless", I of course mean a number not entirely unadjacent to zero.

While I didn't say bullied out of town, you have been paying only selective attention if you are attempting to imply that this hasn't occured.

Speaking of which - how selective does your attention have to be in order to think that there is anything even approaching a statistically significant or in any possible way relevant number of "cases where LGBT individuals have made threats against those who disagree with them on religious grounds. "? Just askin'

So it is your belief that death threats against LGBT individuals by religious conservatives constitute a statistically significant percentage of crime in Canada or the U.S.A.?
Depends on your definition of statisctically significant, I suppose. I do know that it happens orders of fucking magnitude more often than the inverse, and that your leaping to point out that the inverse exists is uncomfortably similar to idiots that are compelled to interject: "but men get raped too!" whenever there is a discussion of violence against women.

The FBI certainly seems to think so.

I was able to find that over 20% of the victims of hate crimes in the US were targeted because of their sexual orientation. I think if we dig a little deeper into that statistic and look into who the offenders are, my bet is that religious conservatives figure large. That number isn't there on the page I saw, but we might be able to find it if we dig a little deeper--wanna bet?

Of the 19% of people who were victimized because of their religion I was unable to find "religious conservative" singled out as a group, the victims were mostly Jews and Muslims. The closest was "protestant" at 3.4% of the 19%, or about two-thirds of a percent. There's no indication that the perpetrators who victimized that 0.65% of hate crimes victims were predominately gay.

Really dude?
Aren't you like a lawyer or something? Why in the world are you making any argument that discrimination by LGBT people against people who disagree with them is, in any universe, comparable to the discrmination they suffer at the hands of religious extremists
What a stupid and asinine argument to make.

I'm sure that there have been threats by LGBT people against those who disagree with them. Whether these threats are in any way statistically significant is another question
I'm baffled at why you chose to make this argument
Please enlighten me.
