Interesting thread I lost a lot of weigh 30+ pounds and dropping dairy was part of it for me.

One doctor simply put it this way "milk is designed to turn a calf into a cow."

I think from a bioaccumulation point of view drinking a milk made from a plant means you are getting less pollutant. I think from my old science class that everytime you go up a step in the food chain the concentration of toxins increases.

It's not so much that the alternative milks are so great. I think it's just that cow's milk is really not good for you.... tough to digest and fatty.

I don't think milk has to come from a tit as other things that look like milk have also appropriated the name.

Coconut water and coconult milk are two different things..... in fact you can go from coconut water which has a clear liquid consistancy, to coconut milk in a carton which is white but not as thick as milk or coconut milk from a can which can range from syrupy to pastelike.

The water version is kinda like drinking a banana as it provides a good source of potasium. The thick paste in a can is used primarily for cooking, for example some Thai dishes call for it. The stuff in the carton now that I think about it might not be called milk but is produced to be used as a milk substitute.

As a side note I think some people shy away from soymilk as some people believe it contains estrogen like molecules.

I think moderation is the key so I rotate between hemp, coconut, almond, flax..... taste wise I like coconut and almond the best.

Read the labels most milk alternatives come in an unsweetened version.... key for those looking at weight loss.

I'm actually looking at both coconut water, packaged by PC, and coconut milk, made by Silk, and they're both different. The water has far less ingredients and nutrients, although it reports magnesium as 10% of your daily intake in a cup. But the milk has way more saturated fat, along with vitamin A, D and B12. Also Calicium and Zinc, but no mention of magnesium. It says they use coconut cream for the milk and coconut water in the PC package.
When buying coconut water look to see if it's made from concentrate or not. I prefer it not to be from concentrate.
