Ottawa base.
Hello,

So at the end of this month I will be looking into getting a new laptop.
I would preferably like to keep it under 850 (but that's a bit negotiable)
Mainly for school work but also some gaming (mainly world of warcraft)
It will not be my main computer so I am not looking into the most, biggest, have the most on it.
At least 4G of ram and 750G/1T on the hard drive.

Any suggestions would be appreciated :D

Asus, which is top rated and Toshiba are the only two I would consider.

You can an excellent laptop of either for <$300 in the US, not sure what GWN prices run.
For <$850 you can move up to the i5 or i7 laptop versions of either, coming with >4GB of ram.....you can never have too much ram.

FWIW my 5½ yr old dual core AMD Toshiba laptop w4G ram, still works/runs just like new dual booted with Vista and Linux. However Linux disk utility reports the HDD has a few bad sectors now but nothing that causes any significant performance problems yet....knock on wood. Not worried because replacing that laptop HDD if needed, is easier than replacing the HDD on a desktop.

Hi Malika....you're price range allows you to get a really nice laptop. for your purposes, particularly gaming like WOW which have decent graphics, your most important criteria will be memory and graphics card.....

as Woody and Simon have already pointed out Asus, I'm in full agreement with that as they make excellent laptops, with the exception of their bottom of the line models($350-$450) but thats kind of true for all the lower tiered machines from all the manufacturers.

here's an example of what you should be looking for.....

it also happens to be my favorite computer store....

ASUS K55VD Notebook K55VD-DH71-CA
- 15.6" Intel i7-3630QM (2.4GHz) 8GB 750GB HDD
- NVIDIA GeForce 610M DVD/RW HDMI BT Win 8

top of the line intel processor, lots of fast memory and a very good graphics processor will have you playing WOW ultra smooth and fast framerates.

shop around for something like that and you'll be very happy for years to come

no need to go back....Win 8.1 will be returning the start menu plus default boot to desktop if you choose, with a few other things people were complaining about. it should be available soon as a free upgrade. as far as perfomance goes, Win 8 is superior to Win 7

i can't stand it. every time i try to adjust the size of the partition i had to download a program to do it since win8 wouldn't let me. there are no endearing qualities to win8 as far as i can tell and the app screen for anything other than a tablet is useless and when i scroll on the pad to quick it jumps back to the app screen from desktop even after shutting all those features off. win8 is following in the windows tradition of every other product being a piece of shit. a lot of other problems as well. the start button doesn't really matter to me since i put an icon down there that basically does the same thing but is missing a few options like turning the thing off. i just hate win8.

between win8 and xbox1 microsoft should hang their head in shame right now.

yea I hear ya....I always use it in desktop mode myself not a fan of the tiles, unless it were a tablet. but i'm pretty sure all the things bugging you are being fixed, including being able to shut down from the start screen

also the next version of Windows is being rushed out too...Windows Blue, sometime in the fall I think

i have used a laptop (an HP i5) for the past 3 years. they all run hot. for gaming, i would say a equivalently priced desktop will be a much better choice. you can upgrade the video as your needs change. it'll run cooler. my next machine will be a desktop.

all good points, but she might have requested laptop info for a reason. Mobility not bell lol. computing 101 say's desktop is the way to go. But if she needs portability, then that's what she needs. All the pros and cons that go with a laptop is what she inquired about. Not busting balls here, and a lot of good input
