One of the men tied to a scandal that includes allegations Toronto Mayor Rob Ford used crack cocaine has pleaded guilty to manslaughter, and struck a deal to avoid going to trial.

One of the men embroiled in the crack cocaine scandal involving Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of gang member Anthony Smith, avoiding a trial.

Nisar Hashimi was charged three months ago with first-degree murder in the shooting of Anthony Smith outside a Toronto nightclub.

Smith was a member of a drug-dealing gang and was photographed before his death with Ford outside the home of a convicted cocaine trafficker.

Hashimi struck the deal Thursday, pleading guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter in exchange for a nine-year sentence. He also pleaded guilty to aggravated assault for shooting Smith's gang associate, Mohammed Khattak.

The deal means police disclosure — including wiretaps, seized cellphones and any potential video involving the mayor — will never be made part of the court record in the case.

However, media organizations including CBC News are still applying to the court to have police search warrants unsealed to see whether there is any evidence implicating Toronto’s mayor in illicit drug use.

Ford has denied he uses crack and has denied any video exists

The difference between Rob Ford and me - I know convicted killers as part of my job as a lawyer. I do not befriend them, cuddle them, drink with them or hug them. OTOH, Rob Ford - well, judge from the photo.

9 years for murdering someone? pretty sweet deal if you ask me...
subtract time served and knock off a bit for good behavior and he'll be out in what? 3 years?

Oarge, I'm a little surprised with your post. I haven't read any reports or seen any photos that the mayor was a "photo-buddy" with the person convicted. The victim - sure, we've all seen that one.

And I am NOT a Ford fan. I'm glad I don't live in TO.

You're right. I misread the text accompanying the news item and I stand corrected. Ford was cuddle-friends with the alleged gang member who was killed and not the killer himself.

I would never be associated with any of the people in the picture that ford was with. I have never come across people like that. I've had some non pristine friends in my day and a friend of mine who is now a cop had a pretty rough upbringing and he never hung around any one who got killed. Rob ford has some scary dealings. But the thing that amazes me the most is that his approval rating hasn't tanked. I guess I'm not surprised given my declining faith in humanity. Just didn't expect to see it in Toronto so soon.

Oh now the anti-Fordites claim that Mayor Ford actually knows who's a murderer which means he might even be an accessory after-the-fact.

Can you people stop impugning his character? I know you don't like him, but you just have to wait for the democratic process to allow the opportunity for change.

Yes, Rob Ford should only have his picture taken with WASPS in upper-crust neighbourhoods even though the majority of his constituents are not exactly that but include visible minorities (can I still use that word?) in poorer neighbourhoods.

(Another example of an anti-Ford person trying to impugn our popular Mayor).

Ford has cornered the "Drug" vote. Pretty soon Now Magazine and others will be supporting him. Before you know it, Ford will be promoting the arts and it will only be a matter of time before the down town crowd fall in line with his vision of fiscal management and doing what's best for the city.

Ex-hippies and true lefties will no longer be tolerated in the new Ford community and they will relocate to the safety of the burbs where they will embrace the green space and clean air that was once enjoyed by their grandparents. Before long they will build a community housing complex where their new leader will live for free and once again, the army of the people will attack the new generation of Ford nation.

Has Toronto ever had a mayor that was not fucked up in some sort of way?

There's a massive difference between spending time with ordinary hard-working folk of all backgrounds and hanging out with crack-dealing, gang member low-lifes. And it doesn't exactly look like Ford is campaigning or discussing politics, does it?

Next time you see PM Harper taking a little time to hang out with the lifers at Kingston Pen, let me know.

A magazine aimed at the country's legal community has published an article that says Toronto Mayor Rob Ford tried to help an 18-year-old man he knew who had been found guilty of armed robbery.

The Lawyers Weekly says Ford, who was a city councillor at the time, appeared as a character witness for the teen in January 2007.

Crown attorney Brian Morreira says he remembers the 18 year-old who used a sawed off shotgun to rob a Toronto taxi driver.

Morreira also remembers Ford in the witness box at the sentencing hearing. He was the only character witness for the defence.

"I was very surprised," Morreira told CBC News. "He was kind of a high profile guy even then."

That much has been confirmed by the police.
Get with it.

It may be one of the reasons that Chief Blair legally can't say Ford is innocent.
