With technology evolving as rapidly as it has over the past decade, it seemed inevitable that tablets would eventually make their way into the classroom. Recently, several school districts decided to take the plunge and institute a 1-to-1 distribution of tablets. You might be thinking education’s old buddy, Apple AAPL -0.8%, came out ahead, but you’d be wrong. This year, Dell DELL -0.11%‘s Latitude 10 tablet, which runs on Windows 8, was the clear winner.

How was this decision made? Well, in the case of Clear Creek Independent School District, CTO Kevin Schwartz said the best way was to put the tablets in the hands of students. Several students were asked to handle a variety of tablets and judge them on a number of factors. The catch was that none of the students were briefed on how to use the tablets before entering the room. Schwartz said they wanted to see which tablet would have the easiest learning curve.

Of all the tablets offered, the students preferred the Latitude 10 because of its ease of use and accessibility. Additionally, students specifically noted they felt the Latitude 10 would best prepare them for college and the work force.

From an IT perspective, Schwartz says the Windows 8 platform provides the easiest solution for security, applications, updates and personalization. Something which is a challenge, he noted, with the iPad. Also challenging with iOS? Productivity software, which is an absolute must for education.

Clear Creek is set to distribute 30,000 tablets once the school year starts. Each student will be assigned a tablet which will remain assigned to them year after year. Parents of younger children, don’t panic quite yet: students won’t be able to bring home their tablets until 6th grade. As Schwartz said, children in grades under 6th are still learning responsibility. However, those in grades 6-12 will be able to bring the tablet home to use much as company-issued laptop.

Even though Microsoft MSFT -0.67%‘s Shape the Future campaign allowed the school districts to purchase the tablets at a discounted rate, 30,000 tablets still represents a substantial dollar amount. Schwartz assured me that the school district has numerous warranties and plans in place in event of damage, theft or fraud, including branding and tracking. Most surprisingly, though, was that Schwartz said by in large, because each tablet is assigned to students individually, most students show a tremendous amount of pride and ownership in the tech.

It’s not just about getting shiny, new technology, though. Schwartz stressed that a large part of tablet education is training students in good “digital citizenship.” This includes teaching kids the ropes of social media, something which any community manager can tell you is a step in the right direction. In Clear Creek ISD, honor roll students help design and distribute a code of conduct, while Jon Phillips, Director of Worldwide Education at Dell, stressed Dell also helps with online best practices.

Will your school district be next? Possibly. Phillips said that the most important thing for Dell is to ensure that schools are ready to implement the new technology in “the right way.” He described the decision as “monumental,” saying that the last thing Dell wants to see is a district struggle with the tech because they weren’t quite ready. Having said that, Phillips is confident that, as more and more school districts demonstrate the value of technology as an educational model, more school districts will adopt tablets as the must-have tool. Phillips also said the Latitude line is continually evolving to ensure neither teachers nor parents will have to devote too many resources to playing IT with the device.

With endorsements like this and a surprisingly low price point, the Latitude 10 could be looking at a handy sales boom come August. Right now, depending on model and options, the Latitude 10 is priced between $579 and $849.

Pretty interesting to note that when you let the students decide what tablet they want instead of the board deciding for them, they chose the Dell Windows 8 :eyebrows:

Apple wins $30 million iPad contract from LA school district

Apple wins $30 million iPad contract from LA school district

By Sam Oliver
The second-largest school system in the U.S., the L.A. Unified School District, has awarded Apple with a $30 million contract to provide iPads to every student it serves [updated with comment from Apple].

Tuesday, according to the Los Angeles Times. The district will pay $678 per device, and the iPads will come preloaded with educational software.

Update: Later Wednesday, Apple issued a press release touting the board's decision to exclusively adopt the iPad for classroom use. The company also noted that the $30 million deal is the first phase of a larger roll-out for the Los Angeles school district.

"Education is in Apple’s DNA and we’re thrilled to work with Los Angeles Unified public schools on this major initiative as they plan to roll out iPads to every student across 47 campuses this fall," said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. "Schools around the world have embraced the engaging and interactive quality of iPad with nearly 10 million iPads already in schools today."

Apple said that the iPads will come with the Pearson Common Core System of Courses, as well as iWork, iLife, iTunes, and other educational third-party apps.

"The Board voted unanimously for Apple because iPad rated the best in quality, was the least expensive option and received the highest scoring by the review panel that included students and teachers," said Jaime Aquino, LAUSD Deputy Superintendent of Instruction. "The vote is another step forward in the District’s plan to equip every one of its students with a device by 2014. When completed, the LAUSD will become the largest district in the nation to provide each of its students with the technology."

Members of the board characterized the deal is one of the "most high-profile contracts" they will ever approve, declaring it "as big as they come."

With the board's approval, the iPad will be used by students at 47 campuses in the L.A. Unified School District. The board opted to choose Apple as the sole vendor after students and teachers rated the iPad as the highest quality tablet available on the market.

The contract is so significant that Apple's rival Microsoft got involved, asking the district to pilot more than one product and consider its Windows devices. The Redmond, Wash., software company argued that most businesses use Microsoft platforms, and Windows tablets would be a good way to expose students to those devices.

District staff, however, declared Apple's iPad the superior product. They said it wouldn't be fair to require some students to use a different, lesser product than the iPad.

iPad sales to educational institutions have become increasingly common as tablets have grown in popularity. Data from last yeardemonstrated that Apple's iPad is definitively replacing sales of traditional PCs in education.

One pilot program in Idaho dubbed "iSchool Campus" has earned rave reviews from educators and students alike. In addition to providing a more engaging way to teach students, Apple's tablet has also helped reduce costs at Paul Elementary in Minidoka County, Idaho, by eliminating 20,000 paper copies a month.

iPad adoption isn't limited to grade school either. An initiative at Arkansas State University will require all incoming students to have an iPad as of this fall.

FYI, that 660,000+ iPads

Yea....you must have missed the facts in the OP in your rush to post your Apple news, which reported 1 school district and 1 University.....
allow me to show you what you missed.....

" Recently, several school districts decided to take the plunge and institute a 1-to-1 distribution of tablets. You might be thinking education’s old buddy, Apple AAPL -0.8%, came out ahead, but you’d be wrong. This year, Dell DELL -0.11%‘s Latitude 10 tablet, which runs on Windows 8, was the clear winner."

I further illustrate this point with some news from today.....
Microsoft Pushing Bing for Search in Schools, Looks to Take on Google

Microsoft also got 34 schools/districts to adopt Windows 8

Microsoft has been trying to push Apple's iPad aside in favor of Surface tablets in schools, and now, the Windows giant is looking to take on Google when it comes to search for students.

Microsoft made two pretty big announcements today that aim to bring Windows 8 and its search engine Bing into K-12 school districts around the U.S.

Microsoft proudly revealed that 34 K-12 schools/school districts around the country have agreed to use the Windows 8 operating system. The schools are located in Virginia, Alabama, Texas, Florida, California, New York, Massachusetts and Maine.

To be more specific, 10 schools and 24 school districts are signing up to use Windows 8.

Microsoft even boasted a quote from an official (Chris White) at the Somers Central School District in New York, who said iPads "could only take us so far" and "weren’t great in front of the classroom." Clearly, this district was part of the bunch that chose Windows 8.

Microsoft's second school-related announcement is an initiative called "Bing for Schools." This allows K-12 schools to customize their Bing search engine so that it's a more appropriate experience for children.

For instance, K-12 schools can remove advertisements from search results, add special learning features and enhance privacy controls.

Schools can also choose to keep the traditional Bing experience, if they'd like. Either way, it's free for schools to participate.

Google's search engine has a strong hold on the search market, and Microsoft is hoping Bing can steal a big piece of that pie.

This isn't Microsoft's first attempt to steal users from Google. Back in February of this year, Microsoft attacked Gmail -- Google's email service -- with the "Scroogled" campaign, which advised the public not to use Gmail because Google scans each email that is sent and received for keywords that can help it target users with more accurate advertisements.

Just last week, Apple scored a $30 million contract from the L.A. Unified School District, which will deploy iPads to all students throughout 47 campuses. The L.A. Unified School District is paying $678 per iPad, which will come pre-loaded with educational software. The district also committed to spending "hundreds of millions of dollars" with Apple over the next two years, since they chose the company as their only tablet vendor.

Microsoft obviously wasn't happy about this. Robyn Hines, senior director of state government affairs for Microsoft, said that using only one platform throughout the district would limit options, such as innovations/price cuts from other companies and students' ability to learn platforms they'd find in the workplace (such as Windows).

Earlier this month, Microsoft announced that it was giving away 10,000 Surface RT tablets to teachers at the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). The idea was to spread RT adoption in schools by supplying teachers with the devices and even training them how to use it. Microsoft is also expected to announce its "Microsoft Surface for education limited time offer" this month, which will offer $199 Surface RTs (normally retails for $499) to schools and colleges interested in adopting the tablets. If the schools want a touch keyboard with their Surface RT, the total price is $249 (retail $599) and with a type keyboard, the cost is $289 (retail $629).

FYI thats many many more that 660.000+ ;) right nibs?

nuff said!

3rd lesson for the kids. How to change the default search provider to Google.
Ummm... I guess that means that all you kids using iOS7 will have to go to the genius bar to learn how to change the default to Google, As Bing is the new default. Oh wait....Apple won't let you change your defaults....oh my....guess you'll have to learn to bookmark google.com :D
