The new logo for the University of Connecticut’s sports teams is a terrifying husky dog that calls to mind images of sexual assault, says one student.

The new logo was unveiled last week, receiving mixed-to-negative reviews from UConn fans who preferred the older, cuter husky dog.

But one student went much further, criticizing the new, meaner logo for being a pro-rape symbol.

In an open letter to UC President Susan Herbst, self-described feminist student Carolyn Luby wrote that the redesigned team logo will intimidate women and empower rape culture.

UConn basketball coach Geno Auriemma said the logo “is looking right through you and saying, ‘Do not mess with me.’ This is a streamlined, fighting dog, and I cannot wait for it to be on our uniforms and court.”

In response, Luby wrote, “What terrifies me about the admiration of such traits is that I know what it feels like to have a real life Husky look straight through you and to feel powerless, and to wonder if even the administration cannot ‘mess with them.’ And I know I am not alone.”

There were two sexual assaults at UConn involving athletes in the past year, Luby claimed.

The logo and the teams it represents are menacing to women, she wrote.

“The face of real life UConn athletics is certainly capable of frightening college women,” wrote Luby.

Herbst did not respond to requests for comment.

I'm sure that Ms Luby will append a copy of her assinine letter to her application to a suitably "radical feminist" law school as part of her application package. And it makes her feel very brave and important as well. And impresses her friends.

Absolutely!

The obnoxious Carolyn Luby (I dare not use the term "Miss") finds this "Terrifying"????

The reporter is either really stupid or an asshole for deliberately misrepresenting Luby's article. I don't think it's wonderfully written, but it certainly isn't saying the new Husky logo promotes rape. That's the dumbest possible interpretation of her argument. You can read it here and decide for yourselves: http://thefeministwire.com/2013/04/an-open-letter-to-uconn-president-susan-herbst/
The OP quotes extracts from Luby's letter which do not appear in the link you give. Either there are 2 letters, 1 very much toned down. Or the original article deliberately mis-stated what Luby wrote.

The Feminist Wire letter is preening and self-important, but not as kooky as the original would seem to be.

daily caller reporter is an idiot who seems to have simply skimmed the article instead of taking the time to understand what he was reading.

The original article by the young lady is more about the state of Uconn athletics negative contributions to the school image and the lack of faculty resolve to help the situation, in fact using the new logo as an example of how the faculty is actively making the problem worse by reinforcing the athletic department's "untouchable" status.

The article was not about the logo at all, but about the reputation of Uconn's athletes and what the logo represents since IT (the logo) is being revamped instead of the way the Uconn team is handled (given leniency when their players commit assault).

I love this! That was my reaction to the letter. Her analysis isn't bad, it's more just 20-year-old takes some social science courses that blow her mind and fill her with the righteous indignation to write an open letter using a seemingly clever allusive technique. I've been there.

Again, I wonder if Ms Luby wrote 2 different statements, as the original article is certainly quoting some rather provocative statements which he attributes to her and which do not appear in the article linked by Socialstrat. Unless the reporter wishes to be sued for libel, there would appear to be something more happening here.

The two quotes the author attributes to her are both in the original letter.

In response, Luby wrote, “What terrifies me about the admiration of such traits is that I know what it feels like to have a real life Husky look straight through you and to feel powerless, and to wonder if even the administration cannot ‘mess with them.’ And I know I am not alone.”
“The face of real life UConn athletics is certainly capable of frightening college women,” wrote Luby.
But nowhere in the letter does Luby say "pro-rape" or that the logo would "empower rape culture." The Daily Caller doesn't quote her saying that, they just suggest that's her meaning:

But one student went much further, criticizing the new, meaner logo for being a pro-rape symbol. [...]

Carolyn Luby's letter as it appears in Feministwire is indeed quite different, however, it has the basic problem of attempting to cover too much ground and mixing unrelated issues as well as using overly powerful language such as "As a UConn student who is proud of my University’s academics and my future degree, I feel frustrated; as a woman student living at this campus I am outright offended. I am appalled by the selective amnesia these justifications display and angered at the superficiality of this Visual Identity Program."

Her points about the Men’s basketball team facing a ban on postseason play for an unacceptably low Academic Progress Rate, student athletes being arrested for second degree breach of peace (domestic violence dispute); third degree burglary, first degree criminal trespassing and disorderly conduct for an incident in a female student’s apartment; as well as another's arrest for Criminal Trespass while on spring break are indeed serious, but what do they really have to do with a new design for the University's athletic mascot? What she really ends up doing is trivializing her argument.

Unfortunately it has been my experience that University teaches people to be long winded and obtuse about getting their point across.

Yes university athletes (at least in the high profile sports) are stars and do get special treatment. They do make the University millions that help support other programs.

Trying to tie the athletics to promotion of rape culture is idiotic. If the University was complicit in covering up rapes by athletes it would be a different story but that doesn't seem to be the case.

However, big time athletics also cause problems particularly at "sports powerhouses." It has been a cause of controversy since the early 1950's witness the song "Pass the Football" from the 1953 Musical Wonderful Town.

"Look at me now
Four years of college
Famous professors
Tutoring me

Scholarship kid
Everything paid for
Food and vacations
All of it free

Day that I left
Everyone gathered
Their cheering still rings in my ears

Ray Wreck rah
Rah Wreck Ray
Rah Wreck
Wreck rah
Rah Wreck, Wreck
Wreck, we love you

'Cause I could pass that football
Like nothin' you have ever seen

Couldn't spell a lick
Couldn't do arithmetic
One and one made three
Thought that dog was C A T

But I could pass that football
Like nothin' you have ever seen

Couldn't write my name
Couldn't translate 'je vous aime'
Never learned to read
Mother Goose or Andre Gide

But I could pass that football
Like nothin' you have ever seen

Couldn't figure riddles
Puzzles made me pout
Where the hell was Moses
When the lights went out?

I couldn't even tell red from green
Get those verbs through my bean
But I was buddies with the dean
Like nothin' you have ever seen

Passed without a fuss
English Lit. and Calculus
Never had to cram
Even passed the bar exam

'Cause I passed that football
Like nothin' you have ever seen

Couldn't dance for beans
Mashed my girls to smithereens
Sometimes blood was spilled
Still my card was always filled

'Cause I could pass that football
Like nothin' you have ever seen

Then there was the week
Albert Einstein came to speak
'Relativity'
Guess who introduced him? Me

'Cause I could pass that football
Like nothin' you have ever seen

Had no table manners
Used to dunk my roll
Always drunk the water from the fingerbowl

Though I would not get up for any she
The prexy's Mom, age ninety-three
Got up and gave her seat to me
Like nothin' you did ever see

In our hall of fame
There's a statue with my name
There we stand, by heck
Lincoln, Washington and Wreck

'Cause I could pass that football
Like nothin' you have ever, ever seen"
