This is the second major factory tragedy in Bangladesh in the past few months. Should Western companies pull up stakes and leave Bangladesh? It should be noted that many developed countries such as Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, etc. started life after WW II as "low cost" producers selling their stuff to Western countries.

Would Bangladesh be better off if Western countries leave and take their jobs with them? If so, would the PRC and/or other countries step in and fill the void? Would the PRC and these other countries serve Bangladesh better than Western countries?

You might want to provide links. Also, Taiwan and South Korea are developing countries. How would cutting manufacturing operations in Bangladesh help it? Unless you're some sort of lefty hippie it doesn't make sense. Accidents are unfortunate, however that is the price they pay for having jobs, and us having Walmart shelves stocked with cheap crap. The bleeding hearts hate it, but the only thing countries like Bangladesh have going on for them is cheap disposable labour.

Oh, and why do you care personally since you can't even spell the name of the country right?

Yup, as long as those (right wing, gun-tottin', anti-union, unemployed-from-losing-there-jobs-to-overseas-labour) keep shopping at Wal-mart...

There is always someone with a lesser sense of scruples to come in if you leave. Perhaps attempting to be the most moral and ethical person you can is a better way of approaching all this.

So if we move the rag trade out of there and back to, say, North America. are you willing to pay more for the clothes? At what point do your morals conflict with your pocketbook?

There are also two other questions. If we move out, will somebody else (China) fill the void? Also, if nobody else fills the void, does Bangladesh suffer from loss of a thriving business and loss of revenue?

I think china has cheaper labour internally. Will they suffer a blow to their economy? Probably.
