There are alot of movies, documentaries, books and memoirs about SPs, but there is not lot of work from the point of view of the hobbyist. There is "Paying For It", a graphic novel by Chester Brown. A book just published is "The Hobbyist":http://www.darrylshelly.com/TheAuthor.php

Has anyone read these books? Any reviews? Are there any other work from the point of view of the hobbyist?

"Paying for It" by Chester Brown is quite good.

As he already "outed" himself, I wonder if he will speak out publicly against Bill 36.

I highly doubt it as it would be a conflict of interest as there is a special thanks in the beginning that reads like this, "Drawn & Quarterly acknowledges the financial support of the Government of Canada through the Canada Book Fund and the Canada Council for the Arts for our publishing activities. "

With respect, I do not see any conflict of interest.

1. Speaking out against Bill 36 would be completely consistent with the message in the book.

2. Many, many Canadian artists, doctors, scientists, publishers, etc., are funded (in all or in part) by the government, but this typically has not stopped them from speaking out against federal policies they disagreed with.

As a business matter, Drawn & Quarterly could be concerned that they might lose out on some future funding if they spoke up but that is not really a conflict of interest per se (at least not in the sense I am thinking of). But Chester Brown is not (as far as I know) an official representative or employee of D&Q anyway, so what he says should not really concern them.
