John Wayne was originally offered the part.

I think he turned it down because it was too violent or too controversial for its time

Warner Bros. purchased the rights with a view to cast Frank Sinatra. Sinatra was interested, however he had broken his wrist during the filming of The Manchurian Candidate eight years previously, and during contract negotiations, he found the large handgun too unwieldy. Additionally, his father had recently passed away, and Sinatra decided he wanted to do some lighter material.

No, John Wayne did not turn it down because it was too violent

Steve McQueen, Paul Newman and Marlon Brando were all considered for the role.

The other two were Burt Lancaster and Robert Mitchum.

I have the same info, except for Burt Lancaster. John Wayne was not forst choice, but he did turn the part down. Maybe because he had two very similar projects. Brannigan and McQ. Newman suggested Clint Eastwood for the lead.
