In just about any driving conditions you would ever get in the city, a driver who knows what he (or she) is doing can manage in any certifiable car.
As an example, I was all over town on Friday in a front-wheel drive compact with all seasons.
Ironically, the only two cars facing the wrong way that i passed in the city were AWD. Likewise, more than half of the vehicles on the side of the highway were AWD.
We don't actually get really difficult driving in this city even in the worst Toronto weather. 80 to 90% of safety on the road comes from the driver. There are extremely few collisions that cannot be attributed to human error.
The only thing I will concede is that AWD and snow tires CAN tend to make less skilled drivers a little safer. On the other hand, these features often give drivers false confidence to drive beyond their abilities; resulting in even more collisions.
