Ya, CBC is really trying force the politically correct kool-aid down our throats, it's annoying how they make a big deal whenever some random soccer mom gets offended over some non-issue...

That being said, I like their documentaries and investigative reporting shows, The Fifth Estate and the Passionate Eye. Depending on the subject, they're pretty good sometimes.

Here is a question for all of you here on TERB. How many original, high-quality Canadian TV shows are there that is not a news, documentary, sports, or sketch comedy program and that is not produced by the CBC?

I can think of a couple, like Flashpoint (from CTV) and Trailer Park Boys (from Showcase), but that's about it.

I want to go one step further sell off all media licenses or production companies that gets one cent from Canadian Taxpayers. All media outlets are a business like any other taxpayer funds a broadcast license and protective Canadian laws should not be their business plan. However I am sure we would hear from even the most conservative broadcaster if selling CBC also meant a true stop to all media funding for Canadian taxpayers. "Privates" want their cake and eat it to, get rid of CBC as competition but still give us the Canadian tax dollars and Canadian broadcast license we have been used to. Drop all funding out of my pocket to these media companies, allow true foreign competition like every company has to deal with and watch the crying would begin from them.
Agreed.

CTV, Citytv, etc. produce no original programming, aside from their obligatory newscasts, but are able to rake in piles of money thanks to the protection they get from the Canadian government and the CRTC. If you want to watch the Superbowl, or pretty much any halfway popular show, you have no choice but to watch the simulcast on the Canadian channel, complete with the same 4 or 5 recycled commercials, and promos for the other American shows that channel has ripped off. I can't think of any other industry where a handful of "private" companies can make so much money while offering nothing of value.

Little Mosque on the Prairie was so successful it was imported into the UK!
I'm glad you liked it, but I can't stand that show . If that is the only example you can come up with from the private networks, you are making my point for me!

Dragon's Den, a CBC original now copied in the US, Republic Of Doyle, Heartland, Fifth Estate, Marketplace, Nature of Things noticeably better sports coverage—even to a non-sports fan—than CTV, and on radio, too many excellent programs to list. The international recognition CTV and Global have earned is far outstripped by the CBC's raft of international awards, and no other broadcaster devotes so many hours to our stories, our concerns and our content.

But then carrying the American SuperBowl has been suggested as some sort of standard in this discussion. It is to laugh.

It tries and fails miserably. Without hockey CBC went months without having a single show in the top 30 ratings in this country. Not a single show!

Do you know what their top rated show is ? Coronation Street a British import.

The public has spoken pretty clearly on the CBC over a number of years. They just don't appreciate what the CBC produces. Is there a worse show on television than 22 Minutes ? It was decent 10 years ago but it's just sad now.

worse than 22Minutes?

Storage wars
Dog the Bounty hunter
Celebrity Apprentice
A Minute To Win It
The World,s Biggest loser.

that kitchen show where the chef yells at everyone
The Newley Wed game

If you believe Rick Salutin at the Toronto Star, the CBC is a flop because Peter Mansbridge is a total sellout and CP24 is more reliable when it comes to "vital" topics:

http://www.thestar.com/opinion/edit...ansbridge_coulda_bin_a_contender_salutin.html
i can only assume that Rick Salutin has the talent to block out each and every, money for Gold and jewellery ad..who is worse, Russell Oliver, Harold the Jewellry Buyer orPinto[you can take that to the bank]?

Q with Jian Ghomeshi

Best radio on the air

(CBC, Sirius satellite, etc)
+1

Ever since he thoroughly handled that jackass Billy Bob Thornton, last year I believe, I try to not miss this program. Billy Bob was being so childish trying to put down Mr. Ghomeshi for bringing up his aweful movies when he was promoting his shitty band at the time. I felt so proud to be Canadian after that interview. He has other great interviews since.

Why is CBC television and radio so bad compared to public broadcasters in other countries for example BBC UK
The CBC is not that bad. People who thinks the CBC is bad is because they can't think for themselves and follow like flies to shit.

Bullshit.....what has emerged lately from CTV or Global besides recycled American crap?
Agreed.

I love CBC Radio. I've worked all over this country in the little god-forsaken towns you lot have never even heard of. I've been on the road in deepest darkest Quebec for weeks at a time and I can always find the English Radio service of the CBC. It's a voice in the wilderness and it's fantastic. CBC probably doesn't appeal to those of you who think that 2 and half men is fine entertainment, or tend to breath through your mouths. But I like it and my say means just as much as anyone else's.

CBC TV has some great shows - the News, documentaries, Fifth Estate, Rick Mercer, Marketplace, etc. Sure some of the shows may be a little hoakie, but I'll take hoakie over the lowest common denominator BS (reality TV - so called) that pervades so called mainstream American television today. One need only look at the travesty that City TV has become since it was bought out by Rogers. Before we had a truly Toronto centric TV with some really excellent thought provoking shows (even Speakers corner and Ed the Sock and Fashion TV) and now we have SHIT just about 24-7 on City TV. I don't even recognize City TV they have been so inviscerated by Rogers.

My only bitch about the CBC is their website. Whoever is running the website is indeed an extreme leftist. The website truly needs a less biased direction. Everyone behind it should be sacked for their blatent leftism. But changing a website is chickenshit and could be easily accomplished.

after red green show and corner gas went off the air, i never went back cuz they just don't have anything worth watching. unless you are a fan of watching the same news cast with different anchors over and over.

^^ Captain, it is possible to be intelligent and still hate the CBC, you realize. There are bright folks on TERB, and we recognize that entire groups of people can't be painted with so broad a brush. To make a statement that people who don't like the CBC are mouth breathers, only makes you look small. You aren't that kind of guy and I know its only one post, but your arguments lose credibility when you disparage so large a swath of Canadians.

As for your reception problem, shell out the $15/month for a satellite radio and you can listen to anything you want, anywhere. Including the CBC.

I didn't say I liked it or that I even watched it. I didn't watch it at all. I was merely saying that it was considered successful enough to be bought and sold in the UK!

I already have satelite radio. It only takes you so far. And a lot of the time when I'm on the road, I'm not in my car.

I'm good with the CBC.

I even listen to CBC 2 quitely in my office to help me concentrate during the day.

The CBC is a Canadian icon, part of our history and I really can't relate to those who would love to see it shut down.

I flip between the comedy channels, Stern, and Dr. Laura. She freaking kills me - makes me feel bad about myself on one call but then reminds me that I do in fact have a good heart and treat people rightly.
