so i have been looking more seriously into getting a dog.

i was talking to my friend tonight and told him i was getting ready to pull the trigger on getting a dog. gonna wait till i get home in march so i am not getting the dog and then bailing when i go away for 2 weeks in march on a plane. don't want to cut the bonding time after first getting him/her.

he told me his purebred girl rott is going off in march to get hooked up with another purebred rott male. told me one of the pups is mine if i want it. i know the mom, she is awesome and loving and friendly but very protective. i hear the male is friendly but protective as well. rott seems like a big dog for a truck though, most people only have little dogs in the trucks with them. not sure what i should do.

I do not know much about dogs, but I asked someone who does. He says rott are gread dog if you have a lot of experience with that kind of dog. They were bred to be fighters and you need the skills to to train them.

Apparently a man had a heart attack and the ambulance guys had to call in the police to shoot the dog so they could treat the man.

His advice is "If he needs advice than he should not do it"

i don't need advice on training a dog, had a lot of them and been around rott's often. i was more looking for suggestions and whatnot. i was thinking pug, puggle or smaller dog only cuz i don't think having a big dog in a truck is fair. i was also looking at rupert http://www.pugalug.com/rupert.html

Mine is awesome, big dog personality (herding bread) in a small package (sheds like crazy - only bad trait), super smart, I can tell him to go upstairs and he just goes.... crazy smart.

shedding is something i am worried about with the inside of my truck being not quite that big. i do agree they are great little breeds though.

How easy is it for a dog to get into your Truck ? Rots are not the lightest breed.

Shelty breed may be a good choice. Friendly smart. My aunt has had several over the years.

I have a little dog and he is a good companion--poodle/terrier mix. He looks a little like the Bichon above but grey in colour. The problem with my breed for you would be their tendency to run off when not on a leash. The pug or a Bichon would be good small breed choices for life on the road.

I wish I had time in my life for a dog. I used to own Springer Spaniels. Wonderful animals. When I lived in the country I had all the space in the world for my ATF dog, Caucasion Shepherds. Big animals, loyal, fearsomely protective, almost seemed to have a sense of humour. When I took him into town (Beaverton), it was like walking around with a rock star. Once people got past how fierce he looked, they all wanted to say hello. Fortunately he loved the attention. Mine looked a lot like this but with grey streaks thrown in. I do not think he would in Simon's truck though.

Crossing the border with a dog can get iffy at times. One douchebag customs official thinking that they're robocop and you might have to decide whether to leave your dog behind or turn around and go home.

Plus what kind of life does a dog really have sitting in a confined space of a truck cab all day?

Get a pug. I have owned 2 of them...best dog ever!!! Perfect companion for a truck driver. You won't regret it!

I suggest adopting a dog from a shelter or a rescue. There are hundreds if not thousands of dogs needing homes. Whatever you choose, know that it is for life. If you drive an 18 wheeler, the bigger the dog the harder it will be to get that dog into the cab when it gets old. Maybe that's why truck drivers tend to have smaller dogs. Best of luck.
