The Grizzlies traded Calderon to the Detroit Pistons for forwards Austin Daye and Tayshaun Prince . I guess when we were talking about the market for Jose . This is what it would fetch you .
Jose Calderon = "Jose Calderon's Expiring Contract"

Bryan burned $30 million in cap space to LOCK IN a 0.400 team...
And save his phony ass for another year.

Rudy Gay within a year will be in the same situation as Jose ie expiring contract . No draft pic was given away and Bargs may fetch a 1st round pic that we lost in the Lawry deal .. If Quincy Acy develops then he will just replace Ed Davis on the roster . What is the purpose of Cap Space when nobody wants to come to T.O as a Free Agent ?

How about Landry Fields and Bargs for Gasol ? ESPN trade machine says this trade works .
I'm not sure I like trading all these two for one deals? We'll be left with an aging team all on expensive contracts. The part of Jose for Gay that made me cringe was giving up on Ed Davis. The guy is young and really coming around. The word is that he may have peeked? I'm not sure about that? ...and neither are they.

Now giving up Fields and Bargs for Gasol, who just like Rudy Gay hasn't been taking over games or leading a team into the playoffs?

This could end up really badly.

I was thinking the same thing ie two consecutive 2 for 1 deals but really with Rudy Gay what will be the need for Fields salary be ? Then again Gasol's expiring contract next year might fetch something big in the market . With Gasol and Gay can you make a push for the 8th spot this year ?

Ya man, last point is a good one.

Gay has peaked and has never been invited to an All-Star game...
So the Dude is not gonna lead you to the Promised Land.

And Quincy is just here training for the Hair Olympics.

One could actually be optimistic...
Except for one 7 foot MILLSTONE locked into a starting role forever.

The Western Conference has been is a far superior conference while Gay has been in the NBA and look at the HOFers he would have had to beat out to be on a Allstar team . Heck Jamaul Magloire was a allstar once and that would have never happened if he played his whole career in the West . How many allstars would have Bosh been on if he played in the West ?

Did Gay peak or was he asked to change his role on the team ? With teamates like Gasol , Randolph , Conley ... Does he really have to lead as much as he used too ?

Clinging to Calderon for another year was as bad an investment as I've seen it. Despite his assist - error ratio, this dude makes the worst decisions at the worst times. any PG can make good assists when they're cruising their way to victory or they're on the hole (deep hole). He has never been there when it's "crunch time". Ed Davis is an up and comer but we will never know how well his potential will grow. that's the gamble. I would take rudy gay over Davis any day. Calderon needs to go.

That's the exact thought I've had reading all the criticisms of this deal from basketball "experts," especially in the US. The Raps need some marquee names in order to draw some talent otherwise all that cap space will get you is overpaying for the mediocre talent.

However, I do believe this trade has to be step one of a multi-step overhaul.

Whether the moves are right or wrong I think if they manage to add Gasol the team becomes more attractive for a free agent if the team can say we have Gasol and Gay.

This move will not make a difference if we keep Bargs and he sulks and his lazy attitude will always be a cloud over the locker room .

I think Bosh is one of the most overrated "All Stars" to ever play the game...
Not a true closer, or franchise player, no 3 point shot, stats PADDED on weak Rap teams.

Also, people have a hard time believing this...
But small forwards start playing age 5 and peak around age 24...
MJ had his best season at age 24... so did Bosh, etc, etc.

No one has an "upside" after age 25.

I agree with your Bosh reference but you know who disagrees with you ??

Chris Bosh thinks he has his Hall of Fame candidacy more or less wrapped up

"Hell, yeah, of course. I've been a Hall of Famer like four years ago," the Miami Heat center told FOX Sports Florida after Friday's 110-88 victory over Detroit. "And I say that very serious, though. I've talked about it before with my friends."

1)does anyone see an upside to the Gay trade? if so what is it?

2)if this trade bombs is Colangelo toast?
Colangelo brought Casey in and to me that is his only good move since he arrived here. Now he keeps jerking Casey around by giving him crap to work with.
Can't wait to see the defense with Gay Bargnani and DeRozen on the floor.

How would the trade bomb ? We are presently shit . Heck Jose can come back to T.O if he wants this summer .

Rudy is not an expiring contract next year. He has two years left after this one... 5 years 82 million.

I'll laugh if Lowry misses more than a handful of games the rest of the way and we are left with JL3 and NBDL type fodder running the point. Basically will be Lowry/Derozan/Gay taking turns playing hero ball anyways.

Article about Casey having to plan for having 2 bad defenders in Derozan and Gay on the floor at the same time..

http://www.thestar.com/sports/basketball/2013/01/31/rudy_gay_wont_play_for_raptors_until_sunday.html

"“We’ve got to be creative on how we want to use him and DeMar (DeRozan) defensively,” Casey said Thursday. “Whether it’s more zone or whatever it is, we’ve got to come up with something to do that.”

Gay, who is likely to make his Raptors debut Sunday afternoon, is known as a prodigious scorer and average defender. That’s pretty much the same scouting report on DeRozan and Casey will have to make sure the Raptors don’t give up so much defensively that even the duo’s offence can’t help."

Now that he's officially out of the closet with the Gay Era...
Colangelo has announced Transgender Cheerleader tryouts for fall 2013...
Which will require building a special 3rd Dressing Room at the ACC.

I like Rudy Gay, but this trade is bad for so many reasons, especially after signing Derozan that huge extension. The problem with this trade is the redundancy of positions, Gay, Ross, DeRozan, Fields and Anderson all play the same position and will be battling for minutes. The only fix would be if Colangelo is not done trading yet and ships off one or more of DeRozan, Fields and Anderson. They should package Bargnani with Fields, Anderson or DeRozan, and they should be able to get some solid pieces to complement Gay, Lowry, Valanciunas, Ross and Amir.

Gay has such a huge contract though I'm not sure they'll be able to afford anyone else.

Won't bomb???? Just watch!
Look at Colangelo's track record from trades to signings to draft choices and even to coaches(Triano).

I am not defending Colangelo ... I am just saying we are presently crap and so only way to go is up therefore how will we know if this trade bombs ?

Question ... Is it the roster or the coach that explains why this team always losses close games ? Have you ever seen a well drawn out last minute play . Although we got robbed the last game , the last play looked like one ugly string of events and they needed a foul to tie or lose that game .
