I'm trying to help out a Buddy, lives in the country and has marginal internet service with bell turbo hub . tech support has told him he needs to run a cable between the hub & computer even though his wireless connection is very good. We ran a cat 5 between them for testing purposes. it might have helped but if so only marginally he says. the hub only has at best 2 bars out of 5 for signal strength and I'm sure that's where the problem lies. The hub has an external antenna port on it, and I see them for sale on ebay, he called Bell tech support & asked about an external antenna , they had no clue what he was talking about .
I would just order him one on ebay , plug it in and see what happenes, but his wife is afraid that it will (1 ) wreck the modem and (2) not help . (she has no sense of humour LOL) the antennas range from $40 up to $100 and more .
I know that it won't damage the modem, & I'm sure that it would help the signal strength, but
any input greatly appreciated .

What kind of antenna is on the hub ? Is it a monopole, dipole, patch, etc. ?

You have to know the frequency, radiation pattern, gain, etc. What type are you buying ?
