The wait to board TTC buses and streetcars may become lengthier for parents with young children, as transit staff are weighing in on restricting the number of strollers allowed onboard.
The touchy topic of baby strollers came up during Monday’s TTC meeting after a Toronto resident complained that buggies can prevent riders from getting on and off the vehicles, especially during rush hour.
“When you see six baby strollers on a bus, the drivers are put in a very bad position,” 61-year-old Elsa La Rosa told TTC commissioners. “Number one, they can’t pick up any other passengers at a bus stop. Number two, if one of the baby strollers wants to get off, everybody has to get off the bus and then get back on the bus again.

“It’s like something out of a comedy act,” she said.
La Rosa suggested limiting the amount of strollers allowed on the vehicles -- two during peak times and three at other times.
TTC chair Karen Stintz asked staff to look into the issue and possible solutions. A report is expected within the next couple of months.
La Rosa also urged commissioners to impose a $2 charge for strollers, but TTC CEO Andy Byford told CP24 on Tuesday that the transit agency has no plans to impose an extra fare.
“I think that would be wrong. Parents with toddlers rely on the TTC, often they don’t have cars,” Byford said. “I don’t think it’s at all acceptable to charge for strollers, so there’s no way we’re going to do that.”
Byford did say, however, that the agency must come to a “sensible solution” when it comes to strollers on TTC vehicles.
“On occasion we have buses that are very, very full, and it may be on limited occasions that we have to say we’re going to only allow a number of strollers on to maintain safety,” he said. “But I want to get everyone on board.”
Byford said the introduction of bigger buses and streetcars planned for this year may help alleviate the problem.
One mom who spoke to CTV Toronto on Tuesday said the TTC is meant to make Toronto more accessible for all residents – including parents with strollers.
“I can’t carry my child and my bags at the same time, so it’s a safety issue,” she said. “I need to have the stroller and if it weren’t for the TTC, I’d be trapped in my house.”

One person complains and now they're going to do a full investigation and issue a report?
This is the biggest problem facing the city?

lol

My view is babies and seniors first. Able bodied young adults can wait for the next bus or walk. A society is judged by how it treats its babies and seniors.

seriously... mothers and vulnerable babies are being attacked now? and talk about a surcharge for strollers?
what next? sorry old man, your fare just went up because you move slow and push that awkward walker around...

Tought to limit them as it really isn't fair as busses get busier further down the route you go.
However they should be made to fold up the stroller to save space. The kid can sit on their lap or shoved under the seat.

The woman who complained should be told to take cabs. Those kids in strollers will have jobs down the road and their taxes will be paying her pension.

Since all of the whining going on lately the TTC must take all suggestions as serious and look into them closer. There needs to be a balance found in all decisions and i am sure that no ones feathers will get ruffled.

i heard on the radio yesterday that the complainer is a "professional" complainer. this is just another distraction from real issues. the top levels in ttc mgt and the Councillors love this kind of stuff. they can talk about it while attempting to turn away billions in business (casino).

It is the triumph of the politics of the disaffected.

i notice some parents also carry kids in strollers when the kid is able to walk without difficulty. if the child can walk a stroller is not needed.
Kids can't walk for long distances or times. You try carrying a 30 pound kid for a couple hours while running errands.

My view is babies and seniors first. Able bodied young adults can wait for the next bus or walk. A society is judged by how it treats its babies and seniors.
This seems intuitive and inherently sensible. Yet, we're having this discussion? Selfish arrogance rears its head again.

It is the triumph of the politics of the disaffected.
Or the stupid.

I know you are kidding but I guess we have all walked behind two giant strollers pushed side by side by their mothers or nannies. They block the whole sidewalk.

I don't really have a problem with strollers, however, some of them are the size of a small car. People need to have a small stroller if they are planning to take the TTC. Keep the bus for walks in the great outdoors.

A fair point. But you try explaining that to the self-righteous left wingnuts pushing their double-wide Bugaboo Donkeys on the sidewalk like its their god-given right......

You have to remember small children don't pace themselves, so after an hour or two of walking, being bored, they just can't go on.

Now what makes it difficult for people to get on and off the buses is trying to use both doors , there used to be a rule and signs that rear doors were for exiting, but a combination of a few illiterate passengers and drivers who won't do a thing to remind people of those rules making getting on and off a bus a pain.

My kid is almost 3 and can walk just fine.. I also have a 8 month old. The 8 month old obviously needs to be in the stroller. We go everywhere with a double stroller (although it's likely different than any double stroller you've seen. It's stacked double, rather than side by side or one in front of the other). The reason is that the 3 year old can still get tired, or start wandering off, or misbehave, so it's necessary to have the stroller there. You can't push a stroller and carry a 30 pound kid (kicking and screaming sometimes) with you.

If a bus driver came by my wife on a day like today and saw her waiting there with her stroller and told her she'd have to wait for the next one as there were already one or two strollers on the bus I'd be livid. It's not right. If anything I would figure that the bus driver should kick OFF some able bodied people to make room for the mother and her stroller.
