So I was planning to head down to Buffalo to the weekend and booked my hotel and the morning of my trip I realized my passport expired (shit!!!). I checked on line and on the official web sites they say it was a no go but on one site it claim an expired passport was good for 6 months after. Mine expired in August so I said what the hell I already payed for the hotel so I decided to try. I got to the border fully ready to turn back but customs officer let me in wit no issues. Even coming back Canadian customs did not say anything about it being expired either. Actually I flew to Vancouver in September with it and did not even realized it was expired then and no one said anything then either. Wondering if anyone else had similar experience?

Probably happens regularly but you sure can't count on it and if they need a reason to keep you out then you've just given them one.
Usually they scan your passport and you'd think that an expired one would cause the screen to flash red or something.
Expired passports do cause red flags... I know from my travels overseas.
OP, its all about profiling. If the border guard thinks you are on the up and up even with an expired passport they will let you into the US, provided you state the nature of your visit.
As for travelling to Vancouver, you do not require a valid passport to travel within Canada, just any government ID will do.
For the cruise person... you got lucky as you were travelling in a group. If your daughter was travelling alone, she would be barred from entering the port country or back into the US.

The comment about a passport being usable for up to six months after expiry was incorrect. Many countries will require your passport to be valid for at least six months after the date of your travel (e.g. in case your travel plans change, your pp remains valid).

When travelling to the States, your passport must be valid until the date of expected departure.

Prior to the requirement to have a passport to travel to the us, I used my expired one as photo id and proof of citizenship. No prob going down, on the way back the Canadian customs guy told me (literally) in no uncertain terms that I was an idiot for travelling with an expired passport. He couldn't explain to me why, but was visibly pissed at me (tho could do nothing to prevent my re entry into my home country, where I hold citizenship). Still think wtf.

Crossing boarder by land you will be fine, but flying out of Pearson to the US you will have a problem, guranteed.
As what others have said, boarder agencies do profiling, and when they scan your passport, they see can everything.
