i don't like to see police go to jail. it's far worse for them than regular civvies. this seems light and our experience in toronto is that bad cops get promoted no matter. that's the wrong part. this should move them to a desk job for life. at a lower salary.
these scumbags went around acting like gangsters for years with the power of the state to enable them. Then they abused the system to drag this thing out for eternity and finally get a slap on the wrist. THEY SHOULD GET SEVERE PENALTIES FOR ABUSING THEIR POSITIONS OF TRUST . They were sworn to enforce the law and given guns to do it, yet they used them to be criminals themselves. What a bad joke.

They were convicted of attempting to obstruct justice and perjury. How does their sentence compare to others convicted of the same crimes?

considering that they are sworn to carry out justice, and their word is basically gospel in a court of law... their sentence should be significantly more severe than joe blow committing the same crimes...

so...you're ok with the many serious charges they weasled out of, and pretend that they didn't happen? You should be campaigning for Bin Laden then , as he was never tried or convicted of anything.

are they getting criminal records?

how does it work in cases like this?
Even if they do, it wont matter much because they'll eventually get a pardon

Holy Cow. They aren't sworn to carry out justice. They are sworn to uphold the law. You make a school boy's mistake of confusing justice with the law. Their word is not gospel, as it gets challenge by defense lawyers all the time. As for a steeper sentence, why them and not judges lawyer and politician who actually make the laws? As for them weaseling out of the charges, people are often charge with numerous offenses and are found guilty of only a few, this was not a uniques situation. If you feel so strongly that they should be held to a higher standard, contact those who make the laws and let them know how you feel. Of course we all know you won't. You'd just rather spew ignorant vitriol

You'll find that you'll see things more clearly if you breath while you type.

point taken about 'justice'...
but you really must have your head in your ass if you don't think that a police officers 'recollection' of a situation will almost without exception be believed by the judge instead of joe scumbags version... EVEN IF the officer is lying through his teeth...

Well I wouldn't take the word of a scum bag either. As for the strength of police testimony goes, I'll let the lawyers on TERB speak to the power of 'recollections', as they've heard them give evidence and seen how judges handle their testimony more than most on this BB. I realize some on here dislike all lawyers and have said so many times, but as the old saying goes, 'you hate them until you need one'.

But in rejecting a jail sentence for the five former officers, Judge Pardu spoke to the “catastrophic” impact of the drawn-out legal process. All five men have been publicly vilified beyond the scope of their convictions, she noted.

I had no idea defamation of character could be used to negate jail time. Why hasn't anyone else tried that yet?

Anyone can get a pardon for almost any crime unless its really serious like rape, murder or kiddie porn. Remember the Sheldon Kennedy case?? Graham James got a pardon for that, but because of public outrage Harper changed the law:

Considering how many convicted people have not been given pardons as reflected by the burgeoning prison population, 'can' is much different than 'will'. which is what you claimed.

and the cop will almost without exception have no vested interest, he was sober, calm and collected, he is a professional who can lose his career for lying to the court...sounds like a pretty damn good witness, what do you expect?

Changes nothing. It points that the number of ex-cons are all growing.

So how many pardons were handed out last year? Something tells me you don't know.

It's just as possible, because they were police, they might not get it; the higher standard argument and all that.

Any bets regarding whether the crown would appeal the sentence?

This case just cemented my low opinion of the justice system, especially the sweetheart arrangement between the crown and law enforcement ( even when the cops are criminal thugs)

There was no evidence that these guys had done this in the past.

they did a search of a residence without a warrant.....for which the court found a warrant would have been granted anyway...but tried to concoct a story to reason why they had done it.

considering the justice system was not brought into disrepute.....and the Complainer was a MAJOR drug dealer. I think the sentence is appropriate. Yes..lose their jobs....but really it was not that egregious.

What planet were you living on in the 80's, when these guys were stealing drugs and cash, taking drugs, selling drugs and beating people up at will with the power of the state to back them up? Talk about abuse of power, and now they get a slap in the wrist after years of getting paid to do nothing.....nice deal if you live in a corrupt society and can swing it. Tell me....WHO ARE THE GOOD GUYS ?
