Hi

Recently Microsoft Security Essentials has stopped working for me.

It won't open I get Error Code 80070715, also I can't access any Microsoft & anti virus sites.

I'm running XP with IE8, all other sites I can load, any help is greatly appreciated

Thanks

Dump MSE which only got a middling rating!

Tried it out awhile back then saw a lousy grade it got and went back to FREE Avast which scored better than MSE....;)

Thanks for the speedy reply, I can't access any anti virus site or uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials

best bet I will take my PC somewhere to get it fixed, I will try Avast afterwards

Happy New Year to everyone here

Sounds like some malware may have been planted on your PC.

Get free Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and run it. It may solve your problem.

If you can't download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware on your PC, use another PC, download it there on a thumb drive then install it on your PC.

Just curious, but how the hell does everyone end up with all this spyware installed? I've never had a problem in 20+ years of using many variants of Windows and Linux. I once ran Windows 7 for 2 months without any anti virus installed and never had a problem. If you are that careless with installing apps on your pc, how do you act in real life?

Do people still blame this crap on IE? Or is it from shitty applications?

When you format your HD and reinstall the O/S, don't you lose all the stuff that is already in the harddrive?
Yepper!
You wipe it clean then start all over with a fresh drive.

I relied on AVG for years without trouble. When I heard that MS SE was great, I installed it, and the Day after, I had a serious virus. I then installed Avast, and have not had a problem since.

Does this mean you lose all your stuff that is currently on the HD? If yes, anyway to salvage that stuff?
Yes you will lose all after a format but it is said the FBI and CIA have apps that can recover what was wiped clean, so who knows....:eyebrows:

Thanks, WoodPeckr took your suggestions PC works great now:)
Good to hear things are OK now.
FWIW this is the main reason I dumped Windoze and use Linux now.
Linux has far better security than M$, plus it is FREE....;)

There are programs available that write a dozen times over every byte, to make recovery impossible. I guess you can cold format the disk a dozen times also.

Yes have heard of doing this if you really are concerned with making critical sensitive data unrecoverable.
Some go even further and say the best thing to do is smash an old HDD to pieces with a sledgehammer, then burn it awhile in a pail of gasoline till it is well done!....:biggrin1:
