Pitbulls in an off-leash park attacked and killed another dog. The owner of the pitbulls says they were "provoked".

Good thing that it wasn't a child that "provoked" them.

CALGARY—A Calgary family say three pitbulls attacked their dogs, killing one, “without warning” at an off-leash park.

Shanese Best and her brother were at the park Monday with their dogs when the pitbulls attacked.

Patrick, a Pomeranian, died of his injuries, while Best’s other dog, a Great Pyrenees named Maximus, was severely injured.

The owner of the pitbulls says he regrets what happened and is sincerely sorry, but suggested the dogs were provoked.

Stephen Jaquish says he owns one of the pitbulls and was dog-sitting the other two.

The pitbulls have been seized by Animal Services and will likely undergo behaviour testing to see whether they should be returned to the owner or euthanized.

“Catastrophic was the best way to describe it,” says Best’s father, Scott McDowell. “Imagine a chew toy. Two pitbulls were fighting over a chew toy and that chew toy was Patrick.”

Jaquish said it was horrible to watch the attack.

“My son is in tears. They lost their dog and my son is losing his dog too — a dog who would never hurt anybody. She’s being deemed dangerous, but I think she was just protecting like any other dog would do.”
So what's the problem? Pitbulls? Or off leash parks? It seems to me this sort of attack is pack behavior, and is MUCH more likely to occur where dogs are running together off leash.

Pitbulls were bred for one thing and one thing only. Anyone who says they make a good family pet is delusional. It doesn't take much to provoke an animal that is bred to kill and yes, thank god it wasn't a child.

I don't own a dog, so I'm no expert. I think this, combined with the fact that he wasn't the owner of two of the pitbulls... ... who takes two dogs they don't own to an off leash park and expects to have complete control of them, expects them to obey their commands? Besides the Dog Whisperer ...
Pretty much. I can't wait for MSOG's response.

I lied, I can.

I wonder if the Great Pyrenees dog injured is a puppy or adult. Great Pyrenees are
gentle giants but they can be protective with their pack. If not even a Pyrenees can
survive a pittbull attack I 'll never let them near my dog not even if it is a Great Dane.

I'm sorry, I'm not a "dog person" either, but didn't the provincial government ban the pitbull breed?

The problem is owners or dog walkers who do not have a clue what they are doing.
Pitbulls are not a problem, stupid people/owners are.

They make a great family pet ... but for not idiots.
Dirk maybe this is where you get tripped up.

My dog got into a fight for his life with a pitbull, years before the ban, and he ended up almost killing the pitbull. He had the dog at his mercy.
At the time my dog was in the prime of his life and a very lean 75lbs.

This looks more like a case of an unfamiliar location.coupled with a human not familiar with the dogs he was looking after....Staffordshire terriers ARE more apt to use a pack mentality if 1 dog is aggressive..let alone 2....
This whole banning of ''pitbulls' because of aggressive behaviour ..to me is bullshit.....they were trained to be aggressive..period or abused

I've said it before and I'll say it again....

there is no such thing as a bad dog....

Just bad owners

What breed is your dog?

I wish my dog can protect me from a pitbull attack. The only mid-size
breed to beat a pitbull I can think of would be a bull terrier based on what
I read about them. I was told not-withstanding a warm temperament they
are pound-for-pound the most powerful dog.
