My old mountain coop parka is wearing out, and my wife refuses to let me buy another one, she says she has never seen anything uglier.

I would commit suicide before being seen in public wearing the Toronto uniform, so no Canada Goose.

I have a variety of coats that look good and are serviceable down to -10, but when it hits -20 I really like that parka.

I could still just go buy another one and deal with the laughter from my wife, but what are the options for being seriously warm without looking like ass?

I bought a GEOX parka 3 years ago and am really happy with it. Slimmer fit than Canada Goose, and IMO the fabric and finish is more refined.

Wear it just about everyday. Down, with real fur.
Take a light weight down jacket like Mountain Hardwear Phantom or Ghost Whisperer Hoodie and layer it under any Gortex or similar shell. It will handle any thing TO weather will toss at you. If you want fashion they will fit under a leather or wool over coat.

Same idea with MEC Storm Degree hooded jacket and a Gortex/similar over jacket.

They are good, a bit pricy. I have three older pieces, but I'm getting feedback from others that they are not the same as they use to be. I can't personally report the same, but even lesser quality is still better than many. It may have something to do with 'now' all of it is assembled in China, where before the zipper were sewn on in Canada and that allowed the to claim Canadian made. Final quality control checks may be less so.

They last , the shells make great rain coats and with the right layers they are more than enough for Ontario winters. But you are right best bought on sale.

Dale of Norway.

Stylish, European, not common, and warm enough for a Toronto winter.
Absolutely nothing wrong with a 'heavy' wool sweater covered by a windbreaker. It worked well for the early arctic and alpine explorers. Don't forget the quintessential togue.

I picked up a Geox overcoat this season and quite like it.m it has a zip out liner (insulated) for especially cold days, but I've been using it as a semi casual/dressy coat as well.

I also have a CG parka but I rarely wear it. It just doesn't get cold enough in the city to justify the hassle Plus, after shopping in Yorkville on Boxing Day and seeing all the numbnuts with the obligatory CG coats made me feel stupid.

For casual, around town, I now use a mid-layer Arcteryx hoodie that's good for down to 0* or so. If its colder, I'll layer a down vest. Those, and my pilot hat, are enough to get me through most days.

sporting life has a pretty good sale now, but selection is running slim.

You can't go wrong with a Navy pea jacket, especially in TO. Just don't make the mistake of buying it too small. You can even buy one at any number of price points you deem necessary.

Fuji, look into Mackage. They are a Montreal base company that make down jackets but are better looking on the person then the Goose the is everywhere. The good thing with Mackage is they dont mass produce then like the Goose jackets.

Bugatti of Germany makes outerwear using Outlast technology which was developed by Nasa. Works like a thermometer, by adjusting your body temp to the outdoor temp. Lightweight and stylish will never disappoint the ladies. Available at all better men's shops.

Between here and there.
Depends on your budget and what you like or deem important in a winter jacket. But for the best "userbility and functionality", I like the ski jackets from Descente, Spyder, Arcteryx, Phenix, Solomon, Sherpa and the like. These jackets are designed for hours on the slopes so are lightweight, ultra warm, very maneuverable, uses either real down or high tech insulation, have fully taped seams, are waterproof and available in a wide range of colours, even very subdued greys and blacks so you don't stick out in the city. You can pick up one of these jackets for $700-1200.

Forget Canada Goose, they are heavy and more style than substance. And you will have the same jacket as every 3rd person in downtown TO. Don't even look at the Nikes, Columbias, entry level North Faces, etc.

I pick my battles, and she has a point. I have had much more success dating now that my wife had some input into my clothes.

When we were first married she threw it a lot of my clothes and I have looked much better ever since.

Heavy, yes. Style over substance? Perhaps starting in the last couple years. Before then, CG was all utility and no style.
