Chubby guy...needed a diet.

WASHINGTON—A U.S. official says retired Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, who commanded the U.S.-led international coalition that drove Saddam Hussein’s forces out of Kuwait in 1991, has died. He was 78.

The official tells The Associated Press that Schwarzkopf died Thursday in Tampa, Fla. The official wasn’t authorized to release the information publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

A much-decorated combat soldier in Vietnam, Schwarzkopf was known popularly as “Stormin’ Norman” for a notoriously explosive temper.

He lived in retirement in Tampa, where he had served in his last military assignment as commander-in-chief of U.S. Central Command. That is the headquarters responsible for U.S. military and security concerns in nearly 20 countries from the eastern Mediterranean and Africa to Pakistan.

More to come

At one point I believe he was considering running for the Presidential election but decided not to when it was disclosed that his wife had some mental issues.

Agree...He prosecuted the war with a minimum loss of life for his own troops. Some great generals have given more thought for their legacy than to care for such things. I think that his father was a senior state trooper or something like that on the Lindbergh kidnapping. Interesting lineage.

He was it was his father's second job - he was a USMA graduate and had been an army officer, he was then recruited to run the New Jersey State Police.

Obviously none of us knew him, but he definitely came across as a decent guy who commanded alot of respect almost naturally.

Sad to hear of his passing. They don't make them like Norman anymore.

I read his biography a few months ago; fascinating life. He spent time in Iran when his father was posted there with the army. He built his rep in Vietnam. Big balls.

Condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace.

Generals like him come only once in a generation. He reportedly had an I.Q. of 170.

The first Schwarzkopf came to the U.S. as a mercenary in the British Army during the American Revolution. Was captured alive by the American forces. They had nowhere to keep him and didn't want to kill him so they released him on his word as a gentleman that he would behave himself. He settled near Trenton.

Using GPS he rolled his army across a desert no one knew could be crossed.... His tanks didn't take a sing hit..... That's some kick ass strategy....

He was a fucker who ordered bulldozers to bury soldiers huddled in the sand. The dozers had machine guns on them firing away so no one could stand up to surrender or escape

He also ordered fleeing soldies killed as they tried to flee back to Iraq on the infamous "road of death"

Iraq soldiers were forced to fight or their families would be killed

How do you justify such mass murder when the enemy did not have a chance and was run by a ego maniac

The killings were needless and lacked humanity or creativity and go against the united nations charter and the geneva convention but when you are a hammer all problems are a nail
