What is with some people bringing smelly food to work? Some ethnic foods smell nice, but I really cannot stand the smell of stinky fish. Once it is heated in the microwave it stinks up the whole cafeteria! The fish smells really bad, like maybe it is expired or like how some women have that stinky pussy fish smell. No restaurant I have dined at cooks fish that smells so bad. Why do some co-workers fish stink so bad? Is it expired, or something?

Different fish give off different odors when cooking. Some are much worse than others. It doesn't mean the fish is spoiled or has gone bad. That's just the way fish is. It also smells worse when re-heated.

one question... Is your co-worker filipino? These people seem to loveeeee stinky fish. I believe they salt the fish and let it dry out in the air.. like jerk meat. The stinkier, the better.

and I totally hear ya about the microwave.. experienced that years ago

It could be fish sauce that you're smelling! That stuff is very strong in odor and can turn people off from eating it. It does smell funky but it's a great dipping sauce and it's often a secret ingredient for marinating meats.

Another possiblity is no one has bothered to clean the microwave recently, so you are smelling a bit of the last 30 things cooked in it.

A co worker use to bring in canned mussels, I'd get one wiff of that and I'd want to hurl. But she loved them.......

To the OP:

Many fish dishes don't smell all that much when they are prepared fresh, but gives off much stronger smells when reheated in the microwave (there are some types of fish that are exceptions, like salmon or tilapia), which is the reason why I tend to eat left-over cooked fish which I've prepared at home cold the next day. If I really want to heat up left-over fish, I may also place a paper towel over the plate or the Tupperware (the paper towel will absorb some of the smell).

Like some of the other posters, I also suspect that the microwave might not be regularly clean (I've had this issue with the microwave at my past workplaces).

My co-workers are oblivious to the awful stenches caused by their food. I now just eat lunch in the office or in my car

no... You haven't smelled real stinky fish unless you've smelt the salted fish the filipinos eat... NOTHING can come close.. no surstromming or dirty microwave like some of you say can even compare xDD

The culprits are from outside Canada..they'll probably take it personally, and in worst case call me racist

I bet you they don't even know the smell bothers you. To them, it probably smells appetizing. Try something subtle like spraying air freshener on their food when they start eating.

There are plenty of foods that stink.

Fish has been mentioned above.

Doritos really stink up a place.

Some curries have rather potent aromas.

Many chinese foods have a distinct smell.

Hamburgers really do smell strong to many people.

Soups, if not bland in taste, can be pungent in the air.

Unless your solution is to simply not eat and not let anyone else eat, you should expect someone's food to bother you. And if you complain, you should expect the complaints to never end about some other dish that someone brings in.

Don't disturb their food unless you're ready to have your own food disturbed. But you might spray some air freshener around the general area after everyone's done eating.
